Identify 5 Filipino value systems that depicts the Eastern philosophy of the Self (3 points each)
Answer in 1 complete sentence for every number.

1. Paggalang sa kapwa - Taught to the child by the parents, it is meant to show respect to
everyone, especially the elders, by saying po and opo. It is considered disrespectful when
younger people talk back to the elderly.

2. Importance of families to Filipinos - The Filipino family is closely-knit, where strong ties are
maintained even after the children have married.

3. “Delicadeza” or Mabuting Asal- means being proper. It is the norm governing the
refinement of behavior or acts of propriety. Related to the Confucian virtue of Li, it simply
means behaving properly in accordance with one’s own self-respect. Shown for instance
when one does not abuse one’s relationship by hurting their feelings.

4. Kagandahang loob - refer to the concern, the support, and the help we extend to both
friends and non-friends alike. Showing compassion to other people. It best expressed in the
Filipino concept of “Pakikiramay”, or going out of one’s way to share sorrow in times of crises.

5. Willingness to help - It is common for the Philippines to be hit by natural disasters, and yet
Filipinos still unite together to help victims. They never fail to come to the aid of those in need.
