Neoclassic and Romantic Periods

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT.
Filipino Artists and their Influence of Neoclassic and Romantic Periods
In the Philippines, the ideology of Neoclassicism and Romanticism can be seen
through various artworks such as paintings, sculptures and architectural structures.
Some of the well- known contributing artists express their skills and ideas on their
respective field of specialization.
II. LEARNING SKILLS FROM THE MELCs.
• Show the influences of Neoclassic and Romantic Periods on Philippine art
forms (A9PRIIIf-4)
Specific Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. Identify the Filipino artists during the Neoclassic and Romantic Periods.
b. Categorize the Philippine artworks into Neoclassical and Romantic based on
its characteristics.
c. Appreciate artworks guided by techniques and styles of the Neoclassic and
Romantic Periods.

LESSON 1: Filipino Artists During the Neoclassical and Romantic Periods
1. Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo
Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo
(1855- 1913)
Born: 1855 - Binondo, Manila, Ph
Died: 1913 - Barcelona, Spain
Known for: Impressionist portrait,
landscape and religious subject painting
Period: Neoclassical, Impressionism
He was a Filipino artist. He is acknowledged as one of the great Filipino painters of the
late 19th century, and is significant in Philippine history for having been an
acquaintance and inspiration for members of the Philippine reform movement.
He was a Filipino painter, sculptor and a political activist of the Philippine Revolution
during the late 19th century. He was known for his dynamic and unique style, along with
his dramatic and captivating canvases.
HIS MASTERPIECE:
He was a National artist in painting. He was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine
landscapes and he was popularly known for his craftmanship and mastery of the use of
light.

It reflects the arrival of the Americans in the
Philippines and the idealism of the artist to
the Philippine society. The painting
reflected the people's desire to escape
from a complicated reality into simplicity.

Metropolitan Museum of Manila
He was a Filipino sculptor who was named National Artist for the Visual Arts in 1973,
and is hailed as the “FATHER OF PHILIPPINE ARTS”.
There is an article on the internet by R.G. Chan & Associates that discusses some of
the Neoclassical and Romantic Architecture during the American colonization in
the Philippines.
