KICKOFF
PARTY
We got the weekend started on the right note with a laid-back Kickoff
Party at Raleigh Speed Shop. There was plenty of bench racing in the
parking lot, great food from a local food truck, and cool projects to see
inside the shop. The shop recently expanded its footprint to include a
special area for climate-controlled vehicle storage and consignment
sales – welcome and helpful services for many local rodders. You can
learn more at RaleighSpeedShop.com. Thanks for great party, guys!

WILLYS
IN WAITING
LON AND MARY CLOUSE’S ’41 WILLYS
TOOK ITS TIME TO FIND THE RIGHT
COMBINATION
I f you hang on to a project car long enough, you’d like to think that the
right build plan for that car will reveal itself to you. Sometimes it takes
finding the right builder to help develop that plan and make it a reality.
Lon and Mary Clouse know what we’re talking about. They bought this ’41
Willys way back in the ’80s with dreams of building a cool street rod. Those
dreams started to materialize in the early-’90s when they worked with a builder
to get the project started. The car was heading down a pro street path with a
tubbed rearend, full roll cage, suicide-style doors, and other tricks of the era when
Lon and Mary decided that it was not the right look or fit for them. They set the
car aside and decided to wait to complete the build.
Throughout this time, Lon was regularly attending car shows and rod runs,
often with his family and his good friend Ed Pettus and Ed’s son, Eddie. Young
Eddie caught a severe case of the hot rod bug and got involved in car building,
eventually opening his own shop, Eddie’s Rod & Custom, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
After seeing some of the successful builds Eddie and his team have turned out,
Lon and Mary decided he would be the right build partner for their Willys
project.
The longtime friends put their collective heads together to determine what
direction to take the Willys. Big power was one goal – Lon had already built a
B&M-blown small block Chevy that was waiting in his garage – but the Clouses
really wanted more of a road-ready street rod instead of a temperamental pro
streeter or Gasser. The right build plan slowly started to reveal itself.
Eddie and his team at the shop made a smart call by ordering up a custom
frame from Art Morrison to get the project started. This provided a great-han-
dling independent front suspension with JRi coil-over shocks and
rack-and-pinion steering, plus a four-link rear suspension for the 9-inch rearend
with 3.55:1 gears. The 20x10-inch Rocket Racing wheels – paired with 18x8-inch
fronts and Pirelli rubber – are plenty fat, but still very streetable. Wilwood disc
brakes were added to bring things to a safe halt.
Lon had been diligent about keeping the blown small block properly stored,
lubricated, and rotated, so it didn’t take much to get it prepped for installation.
The biggest change was topping the supercharger with a Holley Sniper throttle
body EFI setup – something that improved the drivability and street manners
considerably. They also used Cerakote tungsten finishes on major parts for a dis-
tinctive look, and then backed the engine with a 4L80E transmission. A custom
radiator with Spal fans keeps things cool, while the crew at Eddie’s Rod & Cus-

HOT ROD
CRUISE
It’s cool when you can host an event near a scenic mountain range,
but even more fun when you can go cruising through those mountains
in your hot rod or classic ride. That’s the opportunity we had leading
into the RaceDeck Salt Lake Nationals thanks to the Thursday Hot
Rod Cruise coordinated by Steven Fern of the Wasatch Rods and Cus-
toms car club.
The cruise took us through the beautiful Wasatch mountain range
east and north of Salt Lake City. We went past Park City, Coalville, and
other mountain towns as we cruised a combination of Interstate and
two-lane highways toward a lunch stop in the picturesque burg of
Huntsville. After lunch, we hit the road back to Salt Lake City, taking a
different route rather than retracing our steps. We couldn’t think of a
better way to spend a Thursday and kick off the Second RaceDeck Salt
Lake Nationals!

Brian and Valerie Fluetsch’s ’36
Ford Street Rod Came Boxed Up
Like a Do-It-Yourself Woodie Kit
M y friend Phil Price started this ’36 Ford woodie wagon project.
He related the story to me about the history of this car and how
he ended up with it.
Phil had a calico cat who was having a medical issue, so he took it to
the veterinary clinic to have it checked out. While there, the vet noticed
that Phil was wearing a hot rod T-shirt and inquired about it. After he
told her a brief story of his interest in old cars, she asked if he might be
interested in a 1936 Ford her grandfather had stored away before he
passed. Phil was very interested, especially since he’d had a ’36 coupe in
high school and really wanted another.
They set up a time to meet at the building where the car was stored.
You can imagine Phil’s surprise when he saw it was a woodie wagon! They
talked for a while and soon struck a deal. As it turned out, Phil would be
only the woodie’s second owner; the grandfather had bought the wagon
new in 1936, and it had remained in the same family.
Just as interesting, and somewhat troublesome, was the fact that when
the grandfather stored the car, he completely disassembled it for fear the
family was going to sell it as soon as he was gone. He built several very
secure wooden boxes and filled them with all the small- to medium-sized
parts and pieces of the car and then sealed up all the boxes. As you can
imagine, Phil had quite the treasure hunt going through the building to
collect all the parts!
Being a street rodder at heart, there was never any question about
updating the running gear and making this woodie a good driver. Phil had
built many cars over the years, and being a machinist by trade, the
mechanical aspect was right in his wheelhouse – the woodwork, not so
much. Knowing the woodwork would be a daunting task, and being limit-
ed on time to work on the project, Phil chose to sell the car to someone
who could and would complete the car.
This is where my wife Valerie and I entered the story as only the third
owners of this woodie. We are longtime rodders and fans of prewar Fords.
I still own a ’38 Ford coupe street rod that was my first car in high school,
and also a ’32 highboy roadster and a ’40 Fordor sedan. The ’36 made a
natural addition to our stable (all I need now is a ’34 to complete a decade
of Ford hot rods!).
We hauled the project home in pieces, the largest component being
the rolling chassis with a 302c.i. Ford small block engine already mount-

ed. Phil had boxed the original Ford frame and installed a Heidt’s
independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. A
9-inch rearend from a Lincoln Versailles was mounted on a parallel
leaf spring suspension from Chassis Engineering, and disc brakes
were installed all around.
The 302 engine was upgraded with an Edelbrock Performer
carb on a polished aluminum manifold, Pertronix ignition, and
Summit Racing headers feeding into a custom aluminized exhaust
system. It’s cooled by a Walker radiator. A Lokar shifter controls the
Ford AOD trans. We ultimately installed Wheel Vintiques 16x4.5-
and 16x7-inch steel wheels that were powder coated and shod with
Coker Excelsior 5.00x16 and 7.50x16 radials, with Canadian Mercu-
ry Monarch hubcaps adding a distinctive finishing touch.
Phil had cleaned and primed the steel body parts, and we took
the project to Richardson’s Custom Auto Body in Hoquiam, Wash-
ington, where Don Richardson and his talented team finessed the fit
of the steel body components. It looks simple, but there was a lot of
cutting, welding, and massaging required to get the 1936 sheet met-
al to fit as well as this does. Richardson’s also sprayed the PPG
Peryiene Maroon finish.
For the all-important woodwork, the ’36 was hauled to Chris
Messano Woodworks in Harbor City, California. The body was dis-
assembled piece by piece and the framing wood was refinished and
replaced where necessary, and then reassembled with new paneling.
1936 Ford station wagons were not built with liftgates, so Messano
built one resembling what the Ford factory might have offered. It
required a hand-fabricated hinge and stainless steel brackets to hold
the liftgate in the open position.
Ford wagons had roll-up windows in the front doors for the first
time in 1936, but only canvas side curtains to enclose the back
doors, quarters, and the rear. Messano constructed a wider beltline
and retainers to hold sliding glass in the rear doors and quarter pan-
els, copying what Ford would finally include on 1937 wagons.
Before the woodie returned home to Olympia, Washington, it
went to Sid Chavers in Santa Clara,
California, for a custom interior. Glide
seats were expertly padded and covered
with pleated brown leather, with Ger-
man square-weave carpet on the floor
and rear cargo deck.
The woodie returned to Richard-
son’s shop for final assembly. Finishing
details included a Moal hot rod heater
with a custom face plate by Pinkee’s
Rod Shop, which incorporates cup
holders by Santana Interior Design.
The original dash now features Classic
Instruments’ Traditional series gauges.
Wiring is from Ron Francis, and the
banjo steering wheel is from Lime-
works. Stock door handles were
rechromed, and a ’56 Chevy provided
the under-dash emergency brake.
With the help of talented craftspeo-
ple, this woodie not only made it across
the finish line, but the finished product
exceeded all our expectations. All the
effort has been worth it. We’ve loved

Next, Jonathan taped off where the orange stripes would go, and masked

Titling Tips for New Bodies
So, you’re getting close to finishing your next project, which was built
with a new steel body, and now it’s time to get it titled and registered. How
exactly do you do that when there’s no title or VIN to hand over to your
friendly Department of Motor Vehicles clerk? We wondered the same
thing and turned to Real Deal Steel for more information and useful tips
when it comes to the process. Of course, every state is going to have some
different rules and requirements, but this info will get you started down
the right path and answer some common questions.

1937 FORD COUPE
Steve Riley – Booneville, IN
Steve Riley tells us his ’37 Ford was built using a fiberglass Downs body and a matching
frame from Downs with an independent front suspension and other updated features. It’s
powered by a 350c.i. small-block Chevy with the “old school” tuned port fuel injection. “I
can’t make myself upgrade the fuel system because it runs so good,” Steve says. The engine
is backed by a 700R4 transmission and the coupe features power windows, doors, and trunk.
“I’ve owned the car for about five years and I’ve done many upgrades and plan on doing
many more like a four-link,air ride and possibly a more modern fuel delivery setup,” Steve
says.

PARTING SHOT
PINCH OF SALT
With the 2nd RaceDeck Salt Lake Nationals
coverage in this issue, it seemed appropriate
to dig up this photo of Goodguys founder
Gary Meadors and longtime friend Andy
“The Rodfather” Brizio hanging out with
Brizio’s famous flamed Deuce roadster on
the Bonneville Salt Flats. We’re not sure if
this is from one of the duo’s many road trips
across the country or during a visit to Speed
Week, but it sure speaks to the fun and
camaraderie of a couple of longtime friends
enjoying time with a hot rod.
