Course Component:
A key step to using genetics in medicine was the completion of the Human Genome
Project in the early 21st century. A genome is the full set of genes and alleles found in a
species. The Human Genome Project determined the number of all human genes, their
locations, and many of their key base sequences. The genomes of other species have
also been determined and are stored in huge databases. Geneticists are continually
adding to this database as new information and sequences are identified. Knowledge of
the positions of genes and their specific sequences allows geneticists to identify mutations,
and investigate the interaction between different genes and the proteins that they code for.
The analysis of genomes from humans and other species, and the base sequencing of the
genes, has been made possible by the development of fast computers. Scientists and
geneticists can also share their information all around the world in a matter of moments,
saving time by not having to repeat work that has already been done.
SC5-7WS - processes, analyses and evaluates data from secondary sources to develop
evidence-based arguments and conclusions
SC5-9WS – presents science ideas and evidence for a particular purpose and to a specific
audience, using appropriate scientific language
