Kristian Sendon CORDERO (poet, fiction writer, essayist, translator, filmmaker;
Philippines) writes in Filipino, Bikol and Rinconada, and has translated Borges, Kafka,
Wilde and Rilke to these languages. Two of his most recent poetry collections received
the 2014 National Book Awards; his debut collection of poetry in his three respective
languages won the Madrigal-Gonzales Best First Book Award in 2006. He is the deputy
director of the Ateneo de Naga University Press. His participation is courtesy of the
Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.

 THIRD WOLD GEOGRAPHY

Cirilo F. Bautista (July 9, 1941 – May 6, 2018) was a Filipino poet, critic and writer of nonfiction. He
was conferred with the National Artist of the Philippines award in 2014. Bautista was born in Manila
on July 9, 1941 and spent his childhood in Balic-Balic, Sampaloc. He received his basic education
from Legarda Elementary School (1st Honorable Mention, 1954) and Mapa High
School (Valedictorian, 1959). He received his degrees in AB Literature from the University of Santo
Tomas (magna cum laude, 1963), MA Literature from St. Louis University, Baguio (magna cum
laude, 1968), and Doctor of Arts in Language and Literature from De La Salle University-
Manila (1990). He received a fellowship to attend the International Writing Program at the University
of Iowa (1968–1969).

Learnings: The life lesson everyone should have in this poem is when you think of a third
world country, you tend to envision the impoverished towns and I had a completely seen
different outlook on developing countries.

Merlinda Bobis (born 25 November 1959) is a contemporary Philippine-

Australian writer and academic.
Born in Legazpi City, in the Philippines province of Albay, Merlinda Bobis attended Bicol University
High School then completed her B.A. at Aquinas University in Legazpi City. She holds post-graduate
degrees from the University of Santo Tomas and University of Wollongong, and now lives in
Australia. Written in various genres in both Filipino and English, her work integrates elements of the
traditional culture of the Philippines with modern immigrant experience.
Also a dancer and visual artist, Bobis currently teaches at Wollongong University. Her play Rita's
Lullaby was the winner of the 1998 Awgie for Best Radio Play and the international Prix Italia of the
same year; in 2000 White Turtle won the Steele Rudd Award for the Best Collection of Australian
Short Stories and the 2000 Philippine National Book Award. Most recently, in 2006, she has
received the Gintong Aklat Award (Golden Book Award, Philippines) for her novel Banana Heart
Summer, from the Book Development Association of the Philippines. Bobis won the 2016 Christina
Stead Prize for Fiction, NSW Premier's Literary Awards for her book, Locust Girl: A Lovesong.

Learnings:  Lengua Para Diablo is a story about poverty and a family that is suffering because of it. In the story,
a man lost his job and has lost the will to talk to his wife hence, the title, the devil ate his words. The story
illustrated what kind of struggle a normal family must have, especially if they live in poverty.

THE RURAL MAID

Fernando Maramag was an  excellent  poet  and  journalist  in  English.    He  had  a  rich  style
and deep understanding of human nature – qualities which made his poetry appealing to all
readers.  On the other hand, his editorial writings “exerted great influence on the various phases
of the Filipino way of life, particularly in its government, economics, education and politics,”
according to a critic.

He was born on January 21, 1893 in Ilagan, Isabela, to Rafael Maramag and Victoria
Mamuri, a Spanish mestiza.  His parents were wealthy landowners.
At  age  seven,  he  was  enrolled  in  a  public  school in his hometown.  He finished his high
school  in  1908.    He was 15  when  he  entered  the  Philippine  Normal  School.

Learnings: The lesson I learned this poem, The Rural Maid, the persona is a guy who fell in love with a
girl. Even if he left, the memory of his maiden still remains in him; proving that his love for her
transcends time and distance. I especially like the last 2 lines since they visualize and magnify his love for
her.
