INSTRUCTIONS: Use the “Observations” part of your “Laboratory Journal” to fill-up this form. The data
sheet will vary per experiment/activity. Please refer to the data sheet given for the specific
experiment/activity. Check with your instructor regarding the date of submission of this form.

I. INTRODUCTION
[Discuss the background of the experiment conducted]

II. METHODOLOGY
[Summarize the actual procedure employed in the experiment or activity]

III. RESULTS
[Write all the observations and data you collected]
The main goal of this experiment was to get a higher concentrartion of methanol which currently stands at
20%. The process of distillation was used to get a higher concentration of methanol from the 20%
solution. Using the heat plate we were able to form a heat curve for methanol:

From the heat curve, it was determined that boiling point of methanol was at 78 C with its melting point at
-115 C. We then heated up the methanol substance 20% in the distilliation setup to 78 C with an aim to
collect a substance with higher methanol. Unforunaltley, the substance collected was still 20% ethanol.
The simulation then adjusted for pressure (0.53atm) since it will be used at a higher elevation. The
simulation then stated that Methanol would evaporate at 61.21 C at 0.53 atm. We then returned to the
distillation setup and heated the 20% methanol substance to 61 C. The collected substance was 56%
ethanol and 44% water. Methanol has increased by 36%

IV. DISCUSSION
[Explain the actual observation and data collected by backing-up with theories and concepts
learned]

V. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

[What should be improved with this activity?]
The experiment was a success since it was able to raise the concentrarion of methanol in the solution
from 20% to 56% using the process of distiliation. Further improvements can still be made such as
students on their own determing the boiling point of solution should the pressure be not 1 atm. It can help
students learn more about the relationships between boiling / melting point and pressure.
