CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
Right Atrium
Sinus Venosus
Truncus arteriosus
Conus Arteriosus
Ventricle
II. Guide Questions
1. Heart
a. Why are ventricles more muscular than the atria?
The ventricle is more muscular than the atria because it has to push blood
out of the heart, which requires higher pressure in order to reach all the
areas of the body. On the other hand, the atria only have to pump blood to
the ventricle.
b. What valve prevents the backflow of blood from conus arteriosus to the
ventricle?
Semilunar valve
2. Venous System
a. How does the blood in the pulmonary vein differ from that in other veins?
The blood that is in the pulmonary vein is oxygenated blood coming from
the lungs; blood in the other veins is deoxygenated blood collected from
capillaries in various tissues and organs of the body.
b. Name the three veins that empty blood into the sinus venosus.
The three veins that empty blood into the sinus venosus are the left
precava, the right precava, and the postcava.
3. Portal System
a. What visceral organ system/s use/s the portal system extensively?
The organ systems that use the portal system extensively are the digestive
and urogenital systems. Blood rich in food materials like excess glucose
and amino acids is diverted to the liver via the hepatic portal system. Blood
rich in nitrogenous waste products is directed through the renal portal
system into the kidneys and is passed outside in the form of urine.
b. How does the blood in the pulmocutaneous arch differ from that in the
higher two aortic arches?
The blood in the pulmocutaneos arch is deoxygenated blood which is
carried to the lungs and skin of the frog; while the blood in the higher two
aortic arches is oxygenated blood which is delivered to the rest of the frog’s
body.
