WEEKLY LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS
Disaster Risk Reduction 11/12, Quarter 1, Week 5

HAZARDS AND THEIR DIFFERENT TYPES

Name: ___________________________________________ Section: _________________

Most Essential Learning Competencies:

1. Define hazards and give examples of the type of hazards. DRR11/12-Ie-14-15
2. Explain the impact of various hazards on different exposed elements.
DRR11/12-Ie-16

Specific Objectives:
1. Define hazards.
2. Give examples of the types of hazards.
3. Explicate the impact of various hazards on different exposed elements.

Time Allotment: 4 hours

Key Concepts:

➢ Hazard
- Any source that can cause harm or damage to humans, property or the environment.
- An agent that which has the potential to cause harm to vulnerable agent.
- Is define as the source of danger and is something that may cause injury or harm. It is
also the uncertain course of events in a country.
- It is a dangerous phenomenon, substance, human activity, or condition that may
cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damaged, loss of livelihood
and services, social and economic disruptions, or environmental damage.

➢ Different types of Hazard and Its Examples

1. Natural Hazards. They arise from natural processes in the environment.

Natural Hazards and the natural disasters that result can be divided into
several different categories:
▪ Geologic Hazards. These include:
o Earthquakes;
o Volcanic Eruptions;
o Tsunami;
o Landslides;
o Floods;
o Subsidence; and
o Impacts with space objects.

▪ Atmospheric Hazards. These are also natural hazards but processes operating in
the atmosphere are mainly responsible. They will also be considered in this course,
and include:
o Tropical Cyclones;
o Tornadoes;
o Droughts;
o Severe Thunderstorms; and
o Lightning.

▪ Other Natural Hazards - These are hazards that may occur naturally, but do not
fall in to either of the categories above. They will not be considered to any great
extent in this course, but include:
o Insect infestations;
o Disease epidemic; and
o Wildfire.
2. Quasi-Natural Hazard. It arises through the interaction of natural processes and
human activities.
e.g., pollution or desertification, smog, and fog
3. Technological or (man -made) Hazards. These arise directly because of human
activities.
e.g., accidental release of chemicals, toxic and pesticides to flora and fauna.

➢ Hazard Signs and Symbols

This sign and symbols with corresponding meaning below help provide to be extra
cautious, aware, and observable in surroundings.
Each picture is designed to be recognizable to anyone as a signal word like “danger”
or “warning”.

➢ What are the different impacts of hazards?

A hazard can bring about many impacts which can come in different types.
Facilitates and infrastructure are commonly the target of natural hazards. Specifically,
these impacts can trigger accidents and the release of toxic substances, fire and
explosions, potentially resulting in health effects, environmental pollution and economic
losses.
One way to classify hazard impacts by means of general impact themes namely:
• danger to life which includes physical and psychological harm and diseases;
• denial of access like energy, water, communication; and
• transport access damage to the physical environment like buildings and land.
Six more specific types of hazards impact:
1. Physical Impact
o Physical injuries (bone fracture, wounds, bruises);
o Destruction and loss of vital infrastructure like transportation system;
roads, bridges, power lines and communication lines and
o Widespread destruction of housing and buildings.
2. Psychological Impact
o Grief and psychological illness;
o Marital conflict; and
o Depression due to loss of loved ones and properties.
3. Socio-cultural impact
o Displacement of population;
o Loss of Cultural identity; and
o Forced of Adoption.
4. Economic Impact
o Loss of forest due to forest fires;
o Loss of fresh water due to salination;
o Disturbance of biodiversity; and
o Loss of natural rivers.

o Epidemic to people, flora and fauna
o Chronic and permanent illness caused by biological agents
o Proliferation of different viral diseases

Reflection:
Based on the world risk index, the Philippines is considered as the third most
prone to hazard country having more than 20 tropical cyclones in a year, earthquakes,
and more than 20 active volcanoes found. Let us say that you represent your school as a
disaster risk reduction advocate, how will you inform your community on the impact of
the different hazards?
