Project Design (3 marks)
I was asked to design and install a motor circuit for a water pump coupled to a 1hp three phase
motor. The motor circuit will include a disconnection switch, motor starter, stop & start switch, a
Normally Closed (NC) flow switch to ensure that if the water level in the tank is low the flow
switch will turn off the motor circuit.

Schematic Diagram of Motor Circuit

Motor Circuit Parts List

1 three phase isolator at 15A
1 three phase magnetic contactor at 220v relay
1 three phase thermal overload at 220v
1 start and stop push button combination box
2 meters of 1.5mm2 wire in yellow
4 meters of 3.5mm2 wire in red
1 float switch
Set Up and Testing
Relevant Theory
A three-phase motor is used to provide an alternating current to machines using mechanical
energy from its rotating motor shaft. Contactors are devices used to switch electrical current on
and off. A flow switch starts the motor when there is flow and stops the motor when there is no
flow. Start switch is a normally open switch in which the button is flush with its casing and the
stop switch is a normally closed switch that has a button which protrudes for easy stopping. A
continuity test is used to check a circuit for any leaks. An Insulator test is used to measure the
total resistance in a circuit.

Procedure
Laid out all junction and switch boxes on the project board.
Used 3.5mm2 wires for the power circuit and 1.5mm2 for the remote circuit.
Connected all wires according to schematic diagram (Diag. 1) to JS21 standards.
Checked all connections before connecting to supply.
Carried out system checks for proper operation of stop/start station and starter.
Carried out all installation test of motor.

Setup
Carrying out Motor Winding Continuity Test

1. Turned off power by the Isolator

2. Disconnected wiring to motor
3. Turned selector to the continuity tester
4. Tested continuity between windings T1 and T4
5. Tested continuity between T2 and T5
6. Tested continuity between T3 and T6

T1 and T4 T2 and T5 T3 and T6

15.9 ohms 15.9ohms Error

Insulator Resistance Test
1. Disconnected power
2. Disconnected wiring from terminal
3. Selected Megohmmeter
4. Selected 500v/ twice voltage rating of motor.
5. Connected grounding lead to the frame of the motor
6. Connected red lead to T1
7. Selected test and carried out first test
8. Repeated for T2 and T3
9. All 3 readings were 1 mega ohm when testing

Observation
The Disconnection Switch was used in the Motor Control Circuit to stop all power going to the
circuit, working as an isolator for maintenance. The overload is used to protect the circuit from
an overload of current; when the current is too high the contactor coil is de-energized and stops
power to the motor. As the holding contact 13 was removed, the start switch would not remain in
its closed position and would fly open as contact 13 is used to keep it closed. By swapping the
blue and yellow wires the motor will run in the reverse direcrion due to an alteration altera
magnetic field. The continuity reading from windings T1 and T4 is 15.9 ohms, T2 and T5 is 15.9
ohms and T3 and T6 is ERR meaning Error. The insulator resistance readings for all windings
was over 1 mega ohm.

Conclusion
1. Megohmmeter readings were all 1 mega ohm when testing insulation so there were no
leaks in the curcuit.
2. The motor will run single-phase as winding T3/T6 was damaged.
