Welcome to the English 6 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)
Module on Identifying the purpose of various types of informational/factual
text.
This module was collaboratively designed, developed, and reviewed
by educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the
teacher or facilitator, in helping the learners meet the standards set by the
K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore,
this also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to
use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress
while allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are
expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks
included in the module.

Directions: Read the paragraph below and identify the purpose of the
author in writing the paragraph.

The peacock is the national bird of India. They have colorful


feathers, two legs and a small beak. They are famous for their dance.
When a peacock dances it spreads its feathers like a fan. It has a long
shiny dark blue neck. Peacocks are mostly found in the fields. They are
very beautiful birds. The females are known as “Peahen”. Their feathers
are used for making jackets, purses etc. We can see them in a zoo

Informational/Factual text. Also included in this lesson is the meaning of
informational/factual text. The given exercises and activities are carefully
chosen to motivate your interest in learning.

Informational/factual texts endeavor


to inform, instruct, or persuade
through the use of facts and
information.

Directions: Read the short text that follows. Identify its purpose whether
it informs, it entertains, or it persuades. Write your answer on your
paper.

What is storm surge? Storm surge is an abnormal rise of water


caused by the strong winds in a hurricane or a storm. This is over and
above the predicted level of the tide. Storm surge takes place where the
winds are blowing on shore. The highest surge tends to occur where the
strongest winds of the hurricane or storm are. That is why, people are
highly alerted or warned of such occurrence, especially those living along
the coastal areas. Storm surges can damage property and can claim
people’s lives.

The amount of water on Earth remains constant. But its form is always
changing from solid to liquid, from liquid to gas, and back again. It moves
in a pattern called the water cycle. Heat from the sun causes water in
oceans, lakes, and rivers to evaporate into water vapor. Further vapor is
given off by plants and animals.

The paragraph you have read is an example of an Informational Report.


It is a factual text type that classifies, describe, and gives true information
about people, animals, things, or phenomena. It begins with a general
classification or definition, then list a sequence of related information
about the topic and ends with a concluding comment. Now, let’s try if you
can identify the paragraph above if it classifies or describes. Check the
correct answer on page 20.

What is It

 Informational/Factual text is defined as text with the primary


purpose of expressing information about the arts, sciences, or
social studies. This text ranges from newspaper and magazine
articles to digital information to nonfiction trade books to
textbooks and reference materials.
 Informational/factual texts endeavor to inform, to entertain, or
to persuade through the use of facts and information.
 to inform – gives details and information
 to entertain – gives amusement or enjoyment
 to persuade – to believe something, especially after
sustained effort; convince
 an Informational Report. It is a factual text type that classifies,
describes, and gives true information about people, animals,
things, or phenomena. It begins with a general classification or
definition, then list a sequence of related information about the
topic and ends with a concluding comment.

Activity 1.

Directions: Determine the purpose of the author in writing each


paragraph whether to inform, to entertain or to persuade. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Water from this river will overflow if there are no trees to stop it. And if
this will happen. Our plants and animals will die, and people will be very
much affected. Let us do thru-planting activities. Let us all unite our efforts
so that we will all survive in this world.

2. An old man suffering from a nagging back ache went to see his doctor.
The doctor wrote the prescription and told the man to apply it on his back.
After a week, he came back still complaining about the pain. The doctor
asked him if he followed the directions. The man turned and on his back
was the prescription firmly posted.

3. The earth is made up of three layers: the crust, the mantle, and the
core. The outer layer, called the crust, is between 16 and 40 kilometers
thick. It floats on a thicker layer known as the mantle, which is 2,895
kilometers thick. The core, which is 3,475 kilometers thick, is surrounded
by the mantle.

1. Once upon a time in a faraway village there lived a beautiful maiden


named Ursula. All the men in the village wanted to win her heart. But
Ursula only loves one man and he is Artemio.

2. Our city is getting dirty, people do not show concern anymore. Yet
people are the ones largely responsible for all the dirt and mess in the
city. Let us work together hand in hand in making this place beautiful
once more, you can do it. Together we can make something out of it.

3. At no time in history have humans produced so much waste. Ours is a


throw-away society. No matter which area is examined, it is found that for
health, safety, advertising, or other reasons, we produce more waste. We
have to implement ways to make use of people’s waste to prevent further
damage to humanity.

4. The year is 2020. Global warfare is raging. Not one country against
another. This is all-out war-humans against computers. Back in 2018 –
what seems ages ago – the Athan Computer Group perfected a
revolutionary new chip that enabled computers to learn. And learn they
did – at a rate incomprehensible to humans.

5. Residents of a small village in Mabini Bohol can now look forward to a


continuous supply of clean and safe water with the completion of a water
system project. The new water system in Barangay Tangkigan here,
which was funded by the Santa Monica Parish, was formally inaugurated
last week.

1. I am sorry I was not able to attend your birthday party. My mother was
rushed to the hospital because she was complaining of having a chest
pain. I hope to visit you this coming summer vacation.

2. Fossils are usually formed on hard rocks. Prints on rocks are not easily
destroyed or washed away. Plants, insects, and bodies of animals are
sometimes buried in layers of sedimentary rocks. Because of heat and
pressure, they become parts of the hardened rocks.

3. Kites come in many shapes and sizes. They can be constructed from a
large variety of materials, from the simplest, such as paper or cloth, to the
most advanced, such as carbon fiber and tear-proof sail sheet.

4. A thesaurus is a dictionary of synonyms and antonyms. It is a special


dictionary that given a listing of words with words that are similar and
opposite in meaning. This book is important to everyone who wishes to
communicate his ideas precisely and vividly by using different words.

5. What is El Niño? It is a Spanish word which means little boy or child


Jesus. Peruvian Anchovy fisherman used the term traditionally to describe
the appearance of warm ocean current following the South American
Coast. El Niño is a large oceanic fisherman that developed in the Pacific
Ocean and which is associated with extreme climate variability.

B. Directions: Read the informational report below and identify whether


it classifies or describes. Write your answer on your answer sheet.

Weather is the continuous changing conditions of air around us.


These changes can take many different forms, including wind, rain, and
snow. They influence how people live every day. When it rains or snow,
many persons are often forced to stay indoors. Weather also affects one’s
choice of clothes. One wears light clothes and when the weather is hot
and thick-fitting clothes when it is cold.
