The ruling in the Edgewood case proclaimed that Texas's system of financing public

education violated part of the Texas Constitution. Since then the legislature has
tinkered with public school financing several times. To see what's happened since that
decision, let's look at a three school districts. To do so, go to the Texas Education
Agency's website at the address below and use it to gather the data asked for below.
Use the school district in the court case, Edgewood Independent School District in
Bexar County, along with Eanes Independent School District (one of the wealthiest in
Texas) and the school district you attended in high school (if you did not go to High
School in Texas, or if you went to Eanes or Edgewood, use Austin - AISD). In the
table below, provide the information requested using the snapshot data for 2019 (most
recent available).

As you answer these, use complete sentences and explain your responses for each
of the three questions. More = better. Each response should be at least one
paragraph.

1.) How do the three districts compare in terms of students who are economically
disadvantaged or have special needs? Why do these matter; how do they affect
education expenditures?

2.) How do the districts compare in terms of the value of the property in their tax
bases and their tax rates? Why does this matter so much?

3.) Regarding student performance, compare the dropout rates, college admissions
test results, and pass rate (meets grade level standard or above) on state STAAR
test.
