Step 2 of 6

a)

The properties of the store customers can be gender and age. The nominal scale can be used to
categorize gender into 2 groups i.e. male and female. The property age can be measured using
both nominal and interval. While using nominal scale, age can be categorized into 4 group’s i.e.
young, teenager, mid aged and senior. While using interval scale, age is measured using the
interval such as < 10 years; >10 and <20; >20 and<30 etc. if ‘0’ is considered like 0-10; 10-20;
20-30, then ratio scale also can be used.

Voter’s attitude can be based on the properties of gender, age, place, education. As discussed in
the above case, gender can be measured using nominal scale and age can be measured using
nominal, interval and ratio scale. Further place and education can be categorized using nominal
scale i.e. place name and education – literate and illiterate. If literate, this can be further
classified as primary education, secondary education, bachelor degree, post graduation, masters
etc.

scale, hardness is categorized into low, medium and hard.

Step 6 of 6

e)

The properties of profitability of various divisions in a company are division wise revenue and
cost. While using nominal scale, revenue can be categorized based on division i.e. HR, finance,
IT, admin etc. While using ordinal scale, revenue can be measured using ranking i.e. division with
highest revenue as first rank and similarly rank the other divisions as well. Further ratio scale can
be used to categorize the number of divisions, which has profit percentage between 0 – 5; 5 - 10
from last year.
