1. Unit outline
 The aims of this unit are

 To further develop your understanding of robotic and

mechatronic components and their design concepts;
 To integrate your knowledge on mechanical, electrical, and
software design to develop a practically functional and
robust mechatronic device;
 To explore latest mechatronic system design techniques
and enhance independent learning skills;
 To further develop project management skills in a teamwork
environment.

3.1. Portfolio - PLC laboratory
 The aim of PLC laboratories is to practise how to implement the
logic control designs on a Siemens LOGO PLC control board.

Program environment

13
RME40002: Mechatronics Systems Design
 Assessment (15%):

 Laboratories attendance: total 2 practice labs

 Quiz
 In the week-6 laboratory class
 Work on a PLC question relevant to a real-world
problem
 Design a PLC program on Siemens LOGO software
and simulate its correctness

NOTE:
 Question should be completed individually.
 No written report is required for the question.

3.2. Design portfolio
 In this design portfolio, student will aim to design and simulate such
an automated linear shuttle system for a lightweight robotic arm.
 The linear shuttle system you design should satisfy the following
requirements:
1) Carry a robotic arm vertically that weighs 5 kg
and has its mounting base of surface area of 30cm x30 cm.
2) Has an axial moving range of 2 meters.
3) Travel speed should be up to 0.5 m/s.
4) Driven by one brushed rotary DC motor only.
5) Positioning accuracy should be within ±5 mm.
 Design tasks include literature review, Mechanism design, Selection
of DC Motor, System Modelling, Control Design and Simulation.
 This assignment is individually assessed. Students should
individually complete the portfolio report. This assignment is worth
25% of the whole subject.
 For more details on the task and requirement, refer to
RME40002_design_portfolio_guidelines.

3.3. Portfolio– Reflective Report
 The reflective report is primarily to get you to keep a record of your learning
progress and reflection in this unit and particularly your involvement and
experience during the project development period.
 This assignment is individually assessed. Students should individually
complete the assignment report. This assignment is worth 10% of the whole
subject.
 The reflective report should address (but not limited to) the following areas:
 Your personal learning progress
 Your project activities, e.g. discuss with peers or tutors, personal
progress, other issues
 Evidence of your personal progress achievements
 Reflection on your learning experience and project outcome with respect
to resources, discussion with peers, knowledge and skills, time
management, future improvement, etc.

4. Mechatronic project
 Introduction

 Students work independently to build a real functional

mechatronics device.
 This project contributes 50% marks towards the final mark
for the subject.
 Assessment for this project will be individual.
 Expected learning outcomes: applying the learned
knowledge to develop a practical mechatronics system;
developing higher level design skills by using the tools
such as Labview, Matlab/Simulink, and Solidworks to do
system analysis and controller implementation.
