CHAPTER 2

FUNCTIONS OF ART

OVERVIEW

Within art, there exist purposes referred to as function for which a piece of art
may be designed, but no art can be “assigned” a function—either in scholarly studies or
casual conversations-outside of the proper context.

At form exist within very specific contexts that must be considered when
classifying them. Whatever a particular piece of art has existed for centuries or has yet
to be created, it is functional in some way—all art exists for a reason and these reasons
make up the functions of art.

In this chapter, we will be discussing on the functions of art according to its

practical usefulness, its general function as well as the philosophical import of art.

Lesson 1: Functional and Non-functional art

PRE-DISCUSSION

Does art always have a function?

If an artwork did not have a function, can it be called an art?

Compared to other activities of man, art is generally regarded as impractical

because it does not meant to meet the requirements of day-to-day living. To the layman,
art may have little function. The term “function” being taken to mean “practical
usefulness”. To find meaning in art, it must have or serve a utilitarian purpose and be
capable of serving the purpose for which it was designed.

What to expect:

1. Discuss the different functions of art

2. Differentiate functional and non-functional art.

3. Enumerate examples of functional and non-functional arts.

4. Create a jingle about functional and non-functional art.

5. Appreciate the usefulness of an art.

LESSON OUTLINE

Broadly speaking, all arts have function, for man, the maker, creates things
because he has a particular need for them.

The function of arts according to its “practical usefulness” are functional arts and
non-functional arts.
When things or an artwork is created because it has an obvious purpose or it is
used in our everyday lives, it is classified as functional arts. Examples are architecture,
weaving, furniture-making and few other crafts.

Obviously, architecture is directly and almost entirely functional because

buildings are always built for some special purposes. The applied art is also functional .

Non-functional arts are those creations that seem to serve no other end than to
amuse or provide a pleasant escape from life’s daily problems. Examples are paintings,
sculpture, literature, music and the theater arts.
