Impressionism
It is an art movement in painting that started in France in 1860. It is characterized by visual impression of the moment in terms of the shifting effect of color and light.
Impressionist artist paint with many colors and their usual subjects are the outdoors: for example, natures landscape. They want to capture images without subtle details, but with
the use of bold colors.

History and background of Impressionism


 The 20th century covers the period from Jan.1, 1901 –December 31, 2000.
 This century is a full step from the rich culture and traditions. It produced music composers and singers known to be artistic, dance and music lovers, emotional,
expressive, impressive and religious.
 Twentieth Century composers use music in giving guidelines for behavior in society, in giving power to the government, and in teaching.
 From the actual agricultural world before the mid -19th century, industrialization brought a big transformation.
 America and Europe transformed their environments where in great cities saw the growth of factories and the railroad system.
 Automobiles where introduced so with the airplane by the Wright Brothers
 The Time when World War 1 and 2 broke out, Launching of Sputnik and end of Vietnam War.

 Famous writers in Literature at that time were Fitzgerald, Frost Hemingway and Kipling.
 Great artist are Cezanne , Matisse and Picasso.
 Music composers did not cease from discovering new means of communicating and expressing.
 Music composers and performers aimed to share alien sounds to their listener.

Impressionism in Music
 It was adapted from Art Impressionism.
 It is a style of music that makes use of sound to let the listener feel the moods that focus on the structure of music .
 It also started and developed in France.

Characteristics Of Impressionism in Music


 Decorative and fragile beauty, elegance refinement, sensuous tone and subdued atmosphere.
 The rhythm of impressionism music is irregular in terms of phrases.
 It avoids the traditional harmonic progression
 It has unresolved dissonance
 It uses the whole tone scale,

Notable 20th century composers that belong to impressionism


 CLAUDE DEBUSSY
 (1862–1918) Born in France on August 22, 1862.
 His Parents were Manuel Achille Debussy and Victoiiine Manoury.
 His first formal school at the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 10.
 One of the most important and influential of the 20th century composers was Claude Debussy.
 He was the primary exponent of the impressionist movement and the focal point for other impressionist composers.
 He changed the course of musical development by dissolving traditional rules and conventions language of possibilities in harmony, rhythm, form,
texture, and color.
 His early musical talents were channeled into piano lessons.
 He entered the Paris Conservatory in 1873.
 He gained a reputation as an erratic pianist and a rebel in theory and harmony.
 He added other systems of musical composition because of his musical training.

 His role as the “Father of the Modern School of Composition” made its mark in the styles of the later 20th century composers like Igor Stravinsky,
Edgar Varese, and Olivier Messiaen.

 Debussy spent the remaining years of his life as a critic, composer, and performer.
 He died in Paris on March 25, 1918 of cancer at the height of the First
 Debussy’s mature creative period was represented by the following works:
 Fetes ( Festival)- about the mysterious parade in a nocturnal carnival
 Prelude to the Afternoon of a Fawn ( Half man and half goat)
 Nuages (Clouds) (slow moving clouds in the sky) sirenes how mermaids hire sad fisherman into the bottomless of the
sea
 Pelleas et Melisande (1895)—his famous operatic work that drew mixed extreme reactions for its innovative harmonies
and textural treatments.
 La Mer (1905)—a highly imaginative and atmospheric symphonic work for orchestra about the sea La Mer (1905)—a

textured pieces containing his signature work Claire de Lune (Moonlight)
 His musical compositions total more or less 227 which include orchestral music, chamber music, piano music, operas, ballets, songs, and
other vocal music. His Harmonic basis for his music was whole tone scale.

 MAURICE RAVEL
 (1875–1937)
 was born on march 7, 1875 in Ciboure,
 France to a Basque mother and a Swiss father.
 He entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of 14 where he studied with the eminent French composer Gabriel Faure. During his stint with the
school where he stayed until his early 20’s,he had composed a number of masterpieces.
 Ravel’s works include the following:
 Bolero – a piece for orchestra without music
 Daphnis et Chloe , Rhapsodie Espagnole and Pictures at an exhibition are evidences of his being an orchestration
master
 Pavane for a Dead Princess (1899), a slow but lyrical requiem
 Jeux d’Eau or Water Fountains (1901)
 Sonatine for Piano (c.1904)
 Miroirs (Mirrors), 1905, a work for piano known for its harmonic evolution and imagination,
 Gaspard de la Nuit (1908), a set of demonic-inspired pieces based on the poems of Aloysius Bertrand which is arguably
the most difficult piece in the piano repertoire.

 Characteristics of Ravel
 Based his works on modal melodies instead of using major and minor scales.
 He prefer two modes the Dorian and Phrygian ( Do – Do)
 He used extended harmonies and intricate modulations
 He was inspired by various dances
 His Composition method was craftsman-like and perfectionist. Igor Stravinsky once refered Ravel to as “The most perfect of Swiss
watch maker”

Comparative Styles of Debussy and Ravel


 As the two major exponents of French Impressionism in music, Debussy and Ravel had crossed paths during their lifetime although Debussy was thirteen years
older than Ravel.
 While their musical works sound quite similar in terms of their harmonic and textural characteristics, the two differed greatly in their personalities and
approach to music.
 Whereas Debussy was more spontaneous and liberal in form, Ravel was very attentive to the classical norms of musical structure and the compositional
craftsmanship.
 Whereas Debussy was more casual in his portrayal of visual imagery, Ravel was more formal and exacting in the development of his motive ideas.

In all of human history, art has mirrored life in the community, society, and the world in all its colors, lines, shapes, and forms. The 20th century saw a boom in the
interchange of ideas, beliefs, values, and lifestyles that continues to bring the citizens of the world closer together and global trends being reflected in the art movements.

Looking back in time from our vantage point today, the beginning of the 20th century is recognized as a period of revolution and change of art. Artists were century

introduced a variety of new art styles that not only broke artistic traditions of the past but also pointed the way to future innovations. This way, the artist has become modernist
because the traditional ways of representation a display of one’s technical skill and realism – were just not enough.

At first Europe was the birth place for these new styles- styles that greatly influenced the art created later in America. However, this changed as the century
wore on an American artists became the model to which artists in Europe and other parts of the world, turned for inspiration.
