BIOTC 113 Analytical Methods for Biology Lec First Semester, 2021-2022

Assignment 1 (Calculations in Analytical Chemistry)

Solve the problems below by showing the complete solutions of each item. Write your solutions using
MS Word. Use the EQUATION feature of MS Word for your mathematical solutions. Submit your
solutions in pdf format. Note that documents containing equations in word format are altered (or
distorted) when uploaded in Schoology.

Note: Some examples and discussions in the supplemental module are also helpful in solving some of the
items.

1) What is the mass in milligrams of solute in (a) 26.0 mL of 0.150 M sucrose (342 g/mol)? (b) 2.92
L of 5.23 x 10-3 M H2O2?

2) Calculate the p-value for each of the indicated ions in the following:
(a) Na+, Cl-, and OH- in a solution that is 0.0235 M in NaCl and 0.0503 M in NaOH.
(b) H+, Cl-, and Zn2+ in a solution that is 0.800 M in HCl and 0,101 M in ZnCl 2.

3) Convert the following p-functions to molar concentrations:

(a) pH = 8.67
(b) pBr = 0.034
(c) pLi = -0.321

4) A solution was prepared by dissolving 5.76 g of KCl.MgCl 2.6H2O (277.85 g/mol) in sufficient
water to give 2.000 L. Calculate
(a) the molar analytical concentration of KCl.MgCl2
(b) the molar concentration of Cl-
(c) the number of millimoles of Cl- in 25.0 mL of this solution.
(d) pCl for the solution.
(e) ppm K+

5) A 6.42% (w/w) Fe(NO3)3 (241.81 g/mol) solution has a density of 1.059 g/mL. Calculate
(a) the molar analytical concentration of Fe (NO3)3 in this solution.
(b) The mass in grams of Fe (NO3)3 in each liter of this solution.

End.
