Course Overview: Landfills and waste containment systems are designed and constructed with the objective of minimizing the impact of
pollution on the environment. Effective containment design is mandatory to isolate the waste, eliminate the pollution pathways, facilitate
collection and treatment of leachate and gas, and environmental monitoring of the waste till it becomes stable. Improper design these facilities
might pollute nature and natural resources including soil, groundwater and air, eventually posing potential risk to public health and eco-system.
This specialized short-term course is intended to disseminate essential knowledge on theoretical and practical aspects and recent developments
in the design of landfills and waste containment systems. State-of-the-art covering municipal solid waste (MSW) and industrial solid wastes
and their characterization, laws and regulations pertinent to these wastes, design of bottom liners and final covers, treatment of leachate and
gas etc., will be delivered. Fundamental concepts and field perspectives will be attempted along with the case studies.
