45 pts.
Task: Vectors & Scalars/Combining Forces and Moment of Force
Answer each of the following questions. Show working for calculations.
1. Differentiate (by definition) between Vector Quantity and Scalar Quantity 2 pts.
2
A vector quantity has a direction and a magnitude, while a scalar has only a
magnitude.

2. Name three examples each of Scalar and Vector Quantities. 6 pts.

Scalars Vector Quantities
1. Mass. 1. Momentum.
2. Speed. 2. Displacement.
3. Distance. 3. Acceleration.

3. Determine the Net/Resultant (magnitude & direction) for each of the following
free body diagrams. 6 pts.
a. c.

Net Force =2N left Net Force =25N right

b. d.

Net Force =20N south Net Force =4 N right

c. f.

Net Force =224N right Net Force = 0 N

4. F1 has magnitude 60 N and is applied at a 75° angle, whereas F2 has

magnitude 80 N and is applied horizontally, as shown in sketch below. Use the
Parallelogram Method (Scale Diagram) to determine the resultant/net force
(magnitude & direction). 4 pts.

R= √602 t 802 t 2 x 60 x 80 cos 75°

√3600 t 6400 t 9600 x 0.26
√12496 = 111.79 N
Tan-1(60 sin 75/80+60 cos 75)
31.24 °

Answer: 111.79 N
5. Suppose two forces act on an object, a 400 N force in the north direction, and 600
N force at 90 degree to the east. Use the Parallelogram Method (Scale Diagram) to
determine the resultant/net force (magnitude & direction). 4 pts.

R=√4002 t 6002 t 2 x 400 x 600 cos 90°

√160,000 t 360,000 t 480,000 x 0
√520000 = 721.11 N
Tan -1( 400 sin 90/ 600t400 cos 90)
= 33.69°

Answer: 721.11 N
6. Two forces act on an object at right angles to each other as shown below. Find by
calculation method, their resultant/net force (magnitude & direction). 6 pts.

R=√202t402t2x20x40cos 90°
=44.72N
Tan -1(20sin 90/ 40t20 cos 90)
=26.57°

Answer: 44.72N
7. (a.) Define moment of force about a point. 2 pts.
The Moment of a force is a measure of its tendency to cause a body to
rotate about a specific point or axis.

(b.) State the principle of moments, giving the conditions required for the
principle to hold true. 4 pts.

The Principle of Moments states that when a body is balanced, the total
clockwise moment about a point equals the total anticlockwise moment
about the same point.

8. A girl uses a spanner of length 20 cm to tighten a nut. If she pulls at right to the end
of the spanner with a force of 50 N, calculate the moment of her pull. 3 pts.

M=FxD
D= 20 cm/100
50Nx0.2m

Answer: 10 Nm
9. The figure below shows two weights on a beam that is balanced at its center. Calculate the
perpendicular distance (d1) of the 10 N weight from the pivot. 4 pts.
Page 3 of 4
W1xd1= W2xd2
10Nxd1=14Nx2.5m

Answer: 3.5 m
10. Use the diagram below to calculate the Weight (W) that is required to balance
the seesaw in the diagram below. 4 pts.

W1xd1=w2xd2
24Nx0.8m = w2x4.0m

Answer: 4.8 N
