1. Calculate the critical current which can flow through a long superconducting wire of
aluminium of diameter 10-3m. The critical magnetic field for aluminium is
7.9×103amp/metre. Ans.: 24.81 Amp
2. The critical temperature Tc for mercury with isotopic mass 199.5 is 4.185K. Calculate its
critical temperature when its isotopic mass changes to 203.4. Ans.: 4.139K
3. A superconducting tin has a critical temperature of 3.7K in zero magnetic field and a critical
field of 0.0306 tesla at 0K. Find the critical field at 2K. Ans.: 2.82x10-2 A/m
4. The penetration depth λ of mercury at 3.5K is about 75nm.Estimate the values of (a) λ (b)
ns(superconducting electron density) as T→0 and Tc = 4.12K. Ans.: 53nm, 1028/m3
5. Estimate the London penetration depth for Sn from the following data:

Critical temperature =3.7K

Density =7.3×103 kg/m3


Atomic weight =118.7
Effective mass (m*) =1.9m And. 0.0015 nm.

6. A superconducting Nb solenoid carries a current of 20 ampere in order to produce a


magnetic field of 6×104 ampere/metre. If the solenoid is immersed in liquid helium(4.2K) and
H0 for Nb is 1.56×105 ampere/metre, estimate the minimum diameter of wire that may be
used. Tc for Nb is 9.5K. Ans. : 1.15 mm.
7. The lead material works as superconductor at a temperature of Tc=7.26K.If the constant
characteristic field of lead material at 0K is H0=8×105 ampere/metre .Calculate the magnetic
field in the lead at 5K. Ans.: 4.2x105 A/m
8. Calculate the value of London penetration depth λ0 at 0K for lead whose density is 11.3×103
kg/m3 and atomic weight is 207.19. Its Tc is 7.22K. Calculate the increase in λ at 3.61K from
from its value at 0K. Ans. : 29.3 nm, 3.4%
