Charles Spurgeon argues that genuine prayer is the surest sign of conversion. He states that while things like singing hymns, reading scripture, and preaching can be done by the unregenerate, true prayer requires spiritual life that only comes through regeneration by the Holy Spirit. For Spurgeon, prayer is evidence that a person has passed from death to life, as prayer is the breath of heavenly life within a person.

THESE words are the hall-mark of genuine conversion. “Behold, he prayeth” is a surer witness of a man’s conversion than, “Behold, he singeth,” or, “Behold, he readeth the Scripture,” or, “Behold, he preacheth.” These things may be admirably done by men who are not regenerate; but if, in God’s sense of the term, a man really prays, we may know of a surety that he has passed from death unto life. True prayer is a sure evidence of spiritual quickening: the Holy Ghost has put spiritual life into the heart of the man who prays; for prayer is the breath of heavenly life. -Charles Spurgeon
We must not fight God’s battles
with the weapons of ill-will. For us to hate those who are in error, and talk of them with contempt or wish them ill, or do them wrong, is not according to the Spirit of Christ. You cannot cast out Satan by Satan, nor correct error by violence, nor overcome hate by hate. The conquering weapon of the Christian is love; -Charles Spurgeon
