COOPER INDUSTRIES ENGINEERING SERVICE BULLETIN SERVICE BULLETIN #196 REVISED 11/16/92 Type and amount of lubricant to be used during installation of cylinder liner *o" rings into cylinder block. This bulletin supersedes the portion of Bulletin #123 covering applying RTV on “o” rings - liner to block. ALL SUPERIOR ENGINES SUPERIOR has found some customers are using excessive amounts of grease, RTV, or similar materials as a lubricant on the "o" rings, cylinder to block. Excessive amounts of these materials can cause distortion of the cylinder liner resulting in piston to liner seizures during initial operation following an overhaul or liner o" ring replacement. There is also some evidence that some oils, greases, etc, placed on the “o” rings may be altered in composition over time and contribute to corrosive attack of the "o” rings and “o” ring grooves. It is SUPERIOR’s recommendation that a thin coating of mineral (same as that used in the engine) be applied to the “0” rings prior to installation on the liner. Any excess oil should be wiped from the “o" rings prior to insertion of the liners in the block. (Liquid soaps previousty recommended may contain constituents which can cause corrosion/rusting in the "o” ring area.) SUPERIOR FIELD ENGINEERING 12/1/92
