The rite of renewal

For Lectors
Rite of Renewal

After the gospel reading, the celebrant in the homily, based on the sacred text and pertinent to the
particular place and the people involved, explains the meaning of the celebration.
The rite follows the homily.

CALLING OF THE CANDIDATES

The animator of the Lectors and Commentators approaches the sanctuary. Then he/she says:

ANIMATOR: Let the Lectors and Commentators please stand for the Rite of
Renewal.
Reverend Father, the Commission on Worship of the Vicariate of
Tacloban asks you to receive the renewal of our brothers and sisters as
Lectors and Commentators.

PROFESSION OF FAITH
PRIEST: Before you renew your commitment, I ask you now, to profess the
faith of your baptism.
MINISTERS: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, (At the words that follow, up to
and including the Virgin Mary, all bow.) who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third
day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is
seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will
come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the
holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of
sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

EXAMINATION
PRIEST: Dear brothers and sisters, you are here today to be renewed in the
exercise of your ministry. In this ministry, you must be examples of
Christian living in faith and conduct; you must strive to grow in
holiness. Remember that, though many, we are one body because we
share the one bread and one cup. As lay liturgical ministers, therefore,
be especially observant of the Lord’s command to love your neighbor.
For when he gave his body as food to his disciples, he said to them:
“This is my commandment, that you should love one another as I have
loved you.” Therefore, declare once again your intention and
resolution to undertake this ministry.
Are you resolved to perform your ministry with grace and serve your
parish with love in everything you do?
MINISTERS: I am.
PRIEST: Are you resolved to proclaim the Word of God in the liturgical
celebrations and be examples of what you proclaim in word and deed
according to the teachings of the Church?
MINISTERS: I am.
PRIEST: Are you resolved to be good examples to the people in the image and
likeness of our Lord Jesus Christ?
MINISTERS: I am.
PRIEST: Are you resolved to promise respect and obedience to the Diocesan
Bishop, and to your respective Parish Priests who represents our Lord
Jesus Christ in your parish?
MINISTERS: I am.
PRIEST: Let us rely on the help of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ,
and we renew these, our brothers and sisters to service as Lectors and
Commentators for the Vicariate of Tacloban.
May you follow the example of Christ, who did not come to be serve
but to serve not for his own glory but for the greater glory of God the
Father.
MINISTERS: Thanks be to God.

GENERAL INTERCESSIONS
The general intercessions follow, either in the form usual at Mass or in the form provided here. The
celebrant concludes the intercessions with the prayer of blessing. From the following intentions those
best for the occasion may be used or adapted, or other intentions that apply to the particular
circumstances may be composed.

PRIEST: The word of God calls us out of darkness into the light of faith. With
the confidence of God’s children let us ask the Lord to hear our
prayers and to bless these lectors and commentators.
R. Lord, hear our prayer.
or

R. Lord, graciously hear us.

MINISTERS: For the Church, that we may continue to respond to the word of God
which is proclaimed in our midst, we pray to the Lord. R.
For all who listen as the Scriptures are proclaimed, that God’s word
may find in them a fruitful field, we pray to the Lord. R.
For those who have not heard the message of Christ, that we may be
willing to bring them the good news of salvation, we pray to the Lord.
R.
For our readers, that with deep faith and confident voice they may
announce God’s saving word, we pray to the Lord. R.

PRAYER OF BLESSING
With hands extended over the lectors and commentators the celebrant says immediately:
Everlasting God,
when he read in the synagogue at Nazareth,
your Son proclaimed
the good news of salvation
for which he would give up his life.
Bless + these readers.
As they proclaim your words of life,
strengthen their faith
that they may read with conviction and boldness,
and put into practice what they read.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
MINISTERS: Amen.
If it is desirable, the priest may sprinkle holy water on the ministers.
