EXPRESSING INTENTION

( niat/rencana )

Pay attention to the bold-typed expressions.


Santi : So, what about you, Bayu? Do you have any plans?
Bayu : Definitely! My dad and I are going to go fishing. We plan to go fishing in a lake
near my uncle’s house. Would you like to come with us?

Santi : I don’t really like fishing. I would rather stay at home than go fishing. What about
you, Riri? What would you like to do on the long weekend?
Riri : I have made a plan with my mother about what to do on this long weekend. We are
going to practice baking cookies.
Bayu : Are you going to bake choco chips cookies like the other day?
Riri : Well, yes. That is my favorite. But we are going to try to make ginger cookies too.
Riri : Oh, would you like to join me to learn baking cookies? You can come to my
house.
Bayu : It’s a good idea! Or will you go fishing with me and my dad?
Santi : Uhm, not fishing I guess. But I think I would like to bake cookies with Riri. Thanks
for asking me to join you Riri.

Intention is something that you want or plan to do something in the future. For telling
intention or plan, we can use be going to + simple verb and would you like to + simple
verb.

(BE) going to Simple verb (V1)

Perhatikan contoh-contoh berikut:

1. He will  (Dia akan)


2. I am going to (aku akan melakukan)
3. I am planning to  (Aku berencana untuk)
4. I am thinking of  (Aku memikirkan tentang)
5. I fully intended to  (Aku sangat ingin melakukan)
6. May be I will  (Mungkin aku akan)
7. I would like to  (aku ingin melakukan)

Asking intention
Ex :
- Do you have any plans ?
- What are you going to do after school ?
- Why do you collect the coconut shells ?

Expressing Intention
1. Be going to to show PRIOR PLAN, kegiatan yang akan datang yang sudah
direncanakan sebelunya

(+) S + is/am/are + going to + V1


(-) S + is/am/are + not + going to + V1
(?) is/am/are + S + going to + V1

Ex :
I talked to Bob yesterday. He is tired of taking the bus to work. He is going to buy a car.
That’s what he told me.
---- the speaker knows Bob’s intention to buy a new car. Bob made the decision in the past
and he intends to act thin decision in the future.
(+) Arkan is going to visit Mount Bromo next week.
(-) Arkan is not going to visit Mount Bromo next week.
(?) is Arkan going to visit Mount Bromo next week ?

(+) My dad and I are going to go fishing .


(-)
(?) Are you and your dad going to go fishing ?

(+) Ratna is going to buy a new laptop next week.


(-) Ratna is not going to buy a new laptop next week.

2. Would like to is used to show what you would be interested in doing. It is more
about WILLINGNESS to do something. Or in other word, “Would like” is a polite
way to say “I want” in English.
(+) S + would like to + V1
(-) S + would + not like to + V1
(?) Would + S + like to + V1

Ex :

(+) My father would like to stay in Jakarta next month


(-) My father would not like to stay in Jakarta next month
(?) Would my father like to stay in Jakarta next month ?

Dialogue 1
Anandi      : Could you buy me cotton thread and knitting tools?
Rahmani   : Of course. But, what are you doing to do with them?
Anandi      : I’m planning to knit a bag.
Rahmani   : What for?
Anandi      : I want to give it to Nina, my friend. She really wants to have knitting bag. So, I
intend to grant her desire.
Rahmani   : That’s a wonderful idea!

Dialogue 2

Sari           : Hello Ardi, what are you going to do this weekend?
Ardi          : Hello, I am going to visit my grandmother in Jakarta. How about you?
Sari           : Well, I still do not have any plan for the weekend.
Ardi          : Why don’t you go to museum?
Sari           : That is a good idea. But, I have to do my assignment first. Have you done your
assignment?
Ardi          : No, I have not, I’d like to do them this evening.
Sari           : Well, can we do together?
Ardi          : Yes, of course.
Sari           : Okay, great. I will go to your house at 4 P.M then.
Ardi          : I will be waiting for.
