1. Standards in force
The classification of the engine oils is established by the following recognised bodies :
z S.A.E. : Society of Automotive Engineers
z API : American Petroleum Institute
z ACEA : Association des Constructeurs Europeens d'Automobiles

2. S.A.E. standards
2.1. Engine oil grade selection table
The choice of engine oil grade depends on the climate of the country .
2.2. Recommended viscosity grades
The choice of the various viscosity grades is again linked with a use which conforms to the types of climate defined
in the diagram below . For example, the use of grade 10W 40 is limited to temperate countries (from -17 °C to +37 °
C) or countries which have a hot climate .

N.B. : For any other application, the grade must be chosen in line with the climatic zone of the country of use .

3. ACEA standards
3.1. Petrol and diesel mixed oils recommended by PSA
The meaning of the first letter does not change, it always refers to the engine type :
z A = Petrol and petrol/LPG dual fuel engines
z B = Diesel engines

The next figure does change and refers to the following types of oil :
z 3 = High performance oils
z 4 = Oils specific to certain direct injection diesel engines

z 5 = Oils with very high performance, favouring lower fuel consumption

Examples :
z ACEA A3/B3 : High performance and petrol/LPG dual fuel mixed oils
z ACEA A5/B5 : Blended oils with very high performance, for all engines, favouring fuel economy

CAUTION : Since 2004, the ACEA has imposed mixed oils : A1/B1 , A3/B3, A3/B4, A5/B5 . Therefore, all
lubricants recommended by PSA are mixed ; There are no longer any specific petrol or diesel oils .

3.2. Introduction of oils which have a low ash content ( LOW SAPS )
Oils which have a low ash content permit limiting of the ash at the exhaust and therefore contribute to increasing the
service life of the particle filter .
The ash content changes from 1,3 % in current oils to 0,8 % in these new oils (maximum authorised values) .

N.B. : LOW SAPS (Sulfated Ash Phosphorus Sulfur) .

New ACEA specifications :

z C3 : Moderate ash content
z C2 : Moderate ash content and fuel economy
z C1 : Very low ash content and fuel economy

The C2 oil, specific to PSA, corresponds to a request to reduce ash within a reasonable cost limit while retaining the
required fuel economy .
The C2 oil is a petrol and diesel mixed oil with fuel economy most particularly suited to engines fitted with a particle
filter .

4. API oil standards

The meaning of the first letter does not change, it always refers to the engine type :
z S = Petrol and petrol/LPG dual fuel engines
z C = Diesel engines

The second letter corresponds to the evolution level of the oil (in rising order) .
Example : The standard SL is stricter than the standard SJ and corresponds to an improved level of performance .

5. Quality of the engine oils

The engine lubrication oils are classified in line with 3 quality levels :
z Mineral oil or level 1 PSA
z Semi-synthetic oil or level 2 PSA
z Synthetic oil or level 3 PSA

URGENT : To ensure that the engines retain their performance, it is essential that only high quality engine oil is
used : Level 2 PSA minimum (synthetic or semi-synthetic oils) .

CAUTION : Mineral oil can only be used in vehicles fitted with the type 384F engine .

CAUTION : For vehicles sold since 1999 (7/98) model year, and complying with the normal servicing schedule, it
is imperative that an approved semi-synthetic oil is used .

6. New oil with fuel economy and emission control

This oil contributes to the group's fuel economy and pollutant emissions reduction objectives and more particularly
concerns diesel vehicles fitted with a particle filter .

N.B. : Refer to Section 8 : restrictions for all applications with this oil .

CAUTION : The Fuel Economy oil 5W30, which has a restricted field of application, in particular on HDi engines
with particle filter and XU10J4RS, EW10J4S, EW12J4, EW12E4, EW10A, EW7A petrol engines is gradually

being withdrawn from sale .

7. Recommendations (in normal driving conditions)

PSA engines are lubricated in production with TOTAL ACTIVA/QUARTZ INEO ECS oil, which has Fuel Economy
and Emission Control properties .
Comply with the standard drain-refill intervals :
z For vehicles with maintenance interval of 30 000 km (20 000 miles), use exclusively one of the oils TOTAL
ACTIVA / QUARTZ 7000, 9000 or INEO ECS or any other oils with equivalent specifications . These oils
offer specifications which are higher than those defined by norms ACEA A3/B3 or API SL/CF . Failing this,
you should follow the maintenance schedules for severe operating conditions
z For Diesel vehicles with Particle Filter, in order to optimise the operation of the PEFs in the long term, use of
the low ash content oil TOTAL ACTIVA INEO ECS for France and TOTAL QUARTZ INEO ECS outside
France is recommended more particularly ( Or any other oils with equivalent characteristics )
