What is the automation pyramid model?
The automation pyramid classifies the different IT layers of industrial automated
production plants. Every layer or level has is own tasks and IT infrastructure within the
production plants.
 Level 0 (lowest level): Process level with sensors and actuators for collecting
production data and executing commands, respectively. On this level, a parallel
wiring is typical.
 Level 1: Field level acting as the interface between the production process and
control level. Typical systems are fieldbus and input / output modules.
 Level 2: Control level carrying the IT structure for controlling the production
process by means of an ICS (typically SPS).
 Level 3: (Process) management level for the monitoring, operational purposes
as well as the recipe management via a process management system, e.g.
SCADA.
 Level 4: Operational management level including MES, MIS or LIMS serving as
interfaces for the detailed production planning, quality management as well as
data collection, material management and KPI documentation.
 Level 5 (highest level): Company level for the general production planning and
order management via the ERP system.
Describe an example of each layer of the automation pyramid.
 Level 0:
o The sensors getting data about the amount of production in the factory.
 Level 1:
o With the help of PLCs, they communicate the data received from the
sensors to the control level.
 Level 2:
o With the help of SPS, operators get an easy way to manage, monitor and
control production process.
 Level 3:
o Using an SCADA system to transmit electricity around the system.
 Level 4:
o Using CloudLIMS they can manage the data and also the work flow of the
operations of the factory.
 Level 5:
o The company managing the production using ERP system.
What is a SCADA System and what are the differences between SCADA and IoT
implementations?
Is a system of software and hardware elements that allows industrial organizations
to:

 Control industrial processes locally or at remote locations.

 Monitor, gather, and process real-time data.
 Directly interact with devices such as sensors, valves, pumps, motors, and more
through human-machine interface (HMI) software.
 Record events into a log file.
IoT provides more open standards, more interoperability, more ease in adding and
modifying installations, and access to cloud-based resources.
Describe an example of a SCADA System application, include pictures/video.
Monitor wastewater treatment facilities.
The conversion of wastewater back into drinking water can really be thought of as
another type of manufacturing process. It delivers the world's most vital item. Flow rate
sensors are very common in wastewater centers, as are contaminant sensors.
