IoT Study Cases
 Smart Lighting:
o Problem statement: Most smart lighting systems are designed with a simple
motion sensor and can detect whether a human being has moved in or out
of the sensor’s range, but with the implementation of IoT this system
enables users to also set the color and brightness of lights as desired and
monitor the home status, even if you are not home.

o Implementation: By employing both a gateway and an Access Point (AP),

the wireless device must be allocated to the additional data communications
occurring between the two. As a solution to this situation, the IoT ESP8266-
12F is applied so that the data received from sensors are transmitted to the
data server or the data center through the Internet.

o To improve the security of the system, a compact server system is built that
can connect to the network. In the other hand, the server allows users to
install software that gives them the opportunity to add additional apps and
resources to the system.

o Conclusions: The use of encrypted usernames, passwords, tokens, and

etcetera is imperative for added security (SHA-256).

 Smart Urban Planning:

o Problem statement: The percentage of world’s population in urban areas is
increasing really fast and the government of the city of Dordrecht
(Netherlands) is worried about the impact that this increasing population will
affect the urban planning of metropolises.

o Implementation: With the help of IoT they enabled the detection of regular
routes, volume of cars, bicycles, pedestrians, and etcetera. A group of
engineers placed IoT Gateways (Meshlium) to monitor cars, pedestrians
and bicyclists. This monitoring study last one month to detect the road
modality and the occupancy patterns of the streets in order to improve urban
planning in the future.

o Obstacle and solution: They were getting a lot of data so they decided to
download data periodically from each IoT Gateway in order to avoid
overloading problems

o Conclusions: The information that it can provide to be used for various

purposes such as pre and post processing tool of urban development
planning, traffic monitoring system, crowd control, facility usage as well as
marketing purposes.
