Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in

the progression from it, to the full product?

Looking back at my prelim task, as a general overview I feel I
have progressed massively and gained a fully sustainable
understanding of magazine conventions which have allowed me to
produce a successful final product. From taking a look at my
prelim magazine, it is very simplistic and has minimal detail in
comparison to my final piece. As a result, I believe that it did not
look like a professional piece of work in comparison to my final
product. Although, in contrast to this I have used typical
conventions throughout both of the magazines such as the
masthead, cover lines and large central images.

I have learnt that a professional, bright colour scheme is

something that makes the genre of my magazine work well. The
dark, gloomy scheme that you can see in my preliminary is something that makes the piece look very
dull and without little character or personality. I have adapted the colour scheme of my final product
to one more suitable to my genre and also to allow it to stand out as a professional piece. The subtle
blending I have created allows this to work, this is something that I did not take into consideration
during the production stages of my preliminary.

The cover lines on my final piece are much more realistic and persuading.
On my preliminary magazine I have made little use of hyperbole and
superlatives which is a key feature of plugs within magazine covers. These
appear on my final product as the progression stages from my prelim to
my final piece gave me the chance to learn and identify features that the
majority of the time features on the front of a magazine.

Organisation and timing is something that hugely affected the production

of my prelim in comparison to my final magazine. For example the
research and planning that was carried out for my final piece allowed me
to ensure exactly what I wished to create. This is something that I had
spent little time on for my prelim and therefore created something with
little knowledge and inspiration. Additionally, I feel that I have learnt that planning is a key piece in
creating a media product. For example co-ordinating sets for the photo shoot on my prelim was
something that I did not do. As I prepared and planned the shoot for my final set, the images for my
magazine were of a high quality and also reflected genre and personality of the artist on my
magazine.

Overall, on my prelim magazine I have made use of the simple conventions that would be expected
to be found on a magazine. Whereas, on my final piece I feel I have used these once again but to a
much higher standard and with a much better use of technology. Additionally I have pushed myself
to be more creative and independent as my research and planning taught me that individuality
within media products gains success. I have learnt that many conventions must be stuck to but to
also make my own decisions to add personal touches to my own media products.
