Module 4 Electrochemistry
Module 4 Electrochemistry
1. {10 points} Assign oxidation numbers to all atoms in each of the following compound
A. O2 0 = -2
B. Ag(s) Ag = +1
C. H2O2 H = +1 O = -1
D. Na2C2O4 Na = +1 C = +3 O = -2
E. SrCr2O7 Sr = +2 Cr = +6 O = -2
II. (10 pts) Determine the change in oxidation numbers and write the balanced equation for the
following half-reaction. In addition, specify whether each is an oxidation or reduction reaction.
A. Cr(s) → Cr3+(aq)
B. VO3(aq) → V2+(aq)
III. (10 pts) Calculate the value of ε° for each of the following reactions. Determine the half-reactions
in the anode and cathode electrodes.
A. Fe2+(aq) + Ag+(aq) → Fe3+(aq) + Ag(s)
I. (10 pts) Using data from Table 4.2, calculate ε° and ∆G at 25oC for the production of ClO2. Chlorine
dioxide (ClO2) has been tested as a disinfectant for municipal water treatment. It is produced by the
reaction: 2NaClO2 (aq) + Cl2(g) → 2ClO2(g) + 2NaCl (aq). Show complete solution.
II. (10 pts). Draw and label the structure of the alkaline battery. Indicate the overall cell reaction.
III. (5 points). Give at least 2 each of the advantages and disadvantages of the lead storage battery.
Disadvantage -very heavy, batteries tend to be very large bricks because power density is very
low.
- not environmental friendly
