A. HISTORICAL, CULTURAL, AND GEOGRAPHICAL BACKGROUND OF BAROQUE

MUSIC

Baroque music is derived from the Portuguese word “barroco” which means “pearl of irregular shape”.
It came after the Renaissance period and was followed by the Classical period. It was dominated in Germany by
the “Thirty Tears War,” a religious political war. Some of the features are grandeur and flamboyance in
architecture and painting.

Music was described as

united in mood and continuous
in rhythm.

Terraced dynamics
was observed in this period. It
means shifting the volume
from soft to loud and vice
versa. The beginning of
orchestra took place during
this period. Major and minor
scales replaced church modes.
Italian words were used to
describe how music is to be
played.

few solo instruments called the concertino.
 The whole orchestra is called a tutti which is composed
of harpsichord and other stringed instruments.
 It has three movements:
1. Fast –it clearly shows the contrast between the soloist
and the tutti.
2. Slow –this is softer than the first movement.
3. Fast –it shows contrast in tempo and character.

An example of a Concerto Grosso is “Christmas Concerto”

Harpsichord is a keyboard musical instrument in which strings are set in
vibration by plucking. It was one of the most important keyboard instruments in
European music from the 16th through the first half of the 18th century.

The earliest surviving harpsichords were built in Italy in the early 16th century.

The harpsichord is incapable of this dynamic gradation and was overwhelmed

in popularity by the piano. It is a clear characteristic of Baroque music.

II. FUGUE

It is both an instrumental and vocal music.

 It is polyphonic and it focuses on the theme called subject.
 Countersubjects are different melodic idea that accompanied the subject.
 Episodes offer a new material of fragments which can be found between subjects or countersubjects.

Activity 3
Directions: Write a journal entry about the following. Write your answer on the space
provided.

1. The most interesting form of music during the Baroque period is When they have the configuration or the
formstion of the FUGUE

because because of its simplicity but is is also beautiful and divine. It is meaningful and satisfying to hear and
listen to it, and it is pleasurable to lipsing or sing along with it with others. When you hear the mix and the
smooth contrast between the instrument and the voice/s, it's quite enjoyable. It was simple back then, but it has
had a significant impact on today's music all around the world.

2. In my opinion, if Baroque music was not developed, many types of entertainment would not be possible in
the 21st century considering that Baroque music had a lot if impact in todays music. Piano woudve been just a
forgotten instrument and we woudnt even get to hear or to master the piano, violin or any instruments’ iconic
pieces.

3. I appreciate Baroque music because It expands the size, breadth, and complexity of instrumental
performances, as well as determining or discovering opera, concerto, and other works. Numerous musical words
and notions from the Baroque era have survived and are still used today. Imagine many musical pieces were
created and to be honest if it werent for Baroque Music, there woudnt be many inspired or gifted musicians
today.
