Brief Description
This course-unit enables learners to understand the concept of monumental sculpture, its
meaning and role to the community. The unit provides learners with Knowledge and skills on
methods and processes involved in the production of monumental sculptures and how to work on
scale. It promotes awareness amongst learners on how to appreciate, plan and design for the
environment through sculpture. The unit also provides technical competence on selection and
placement of sculptures with an environment.

Course objectives
The aim of the unit is to enable learners;

 Gain knowledge on the role of monumental sculpture to community


 Appreciate the environment and its relation to placement of monumental sculpture
work(s)
 Acquaint themselves with a step by-step process and procedure in monumental sculpture
production
 Learn how to work on scale while producing a sculpture art work
 Demonstrate skills in identifying and selecting appropriate sites for placement of
monumental sculpture projects

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course unit, learners should be able to
 Articulate the role of monumental sculpture to a given community
 Identify, select and explore appropriate material(s) and technique(s) for monumental
sculpture specific to a given environment
 Develop individual monumental sculpture concepts and work out an illustrated proposal
 Produce individual marquettes suitable for monumental sculpture based on the
proposal(s) made
 Demonstrate ability to work on scale through Production of group monumental sculpture
projects

Detailed course Description


Concept of monumental sculpture: meaning, role and purpose to community
Individual Survey, research and selection of appropriate environments and materials for
monumental sculptures through supervised individual initiatives
Proposals for monumental sculpture
Development of individual proposals for monumental sculpture project with focus on
structure, articulation of project concept and presentation
Design process;
.Production of individual marquettes/ sample models for selection and development into
group projects, with emphasis on relationship to identified environments for placement.

Scaling and production of monumental sculpture


Working on scale and production of group sculpture (monumental) Projects selected from
individual proposals

Method of delivery
Library research field visits/ excursions, presentations group discussion, critiques, studio
investigation and production.
