CASE STUDY: FACTORS TO GRADE 11 STUDENTS’
TARDINESS IN COMPLETING TASKS ONLINE

1. What is the rationale of your chosen problem?

Last March 16, 2020, Don Bosco Academy Pampanga suspended face-to-

face classes because of the lockdown due to the covid-19 pandemic. In line with this,

online learning has been implemented through the use of “GENYO”. But during those

days, asynchronous classes is the one being implemented. At present, DBA Pampanga

had implemented full pack online learning, not only asynchronous, but also synchronous

classes. During synchronous and asynchronous classes, students are given tasks or

assessments, and of course with their respective deadlines. But one main problem is

present among students, and this is none other than their tardiness in completing and

submitting their task online. Student tardiness in completing activities is already present

even during the old normal set-up, but this problem is even more evident and inevitable

during the new normal way of learning. And this is because for several reasons like in

terms of technicalities, personal problems, psychological challenges, etc.

The tardiness of students in completing their tasks online is a problem that is very

apposite that even the researchers have experienced. Based on their stories, some of the

researchers have committed “late submissions” during online classes. And the reasons

are connectivity problems, laziness, exhaustion, and procrastination. And according to

some of the researchers who have committed late submissions, they tend to be lazy, to

be cozy, and to procrastinate because they are at their comfort zone, which is their

home. It takes self-discipline to be attentive and focused in a regular classroom

setting. With online class, it takes will power to stay awake and focused. Short attention

span have gone even shorter. Since everyone is working from the comfort of their homes,

we can’t help but give in to that comfort. Somehow dozing off became easier and

multitasking more frequently. Due to the lack of interaction during online class, we tend

to get distracted easily on our smartphones, our pets and deliveries rather than the

ongoing class lessons (Amadora, 2020). Attending to multiple streams of information and

entertainment while doing homework, writing a paper, studying, or even during class

(face‐to‐face or online) has become common behavior among young people. This delays

the work of submission to other students which causes the students to review again the

material when they are distracted. It also causes mental fatigue by switching back & forth

between tasks (Schmidt, 2020).

Up to this day, tardiness cannot be denied especially during this pandemic, where

most students are having a hard time to cope up with classes because students are

having a hard time taking attention to their studies just so that students do not get left

behind. It is naive to assume that a student with a history in a traditional learning

environment should be able to easily adjust to a more independent, isolated teaching

methodology. Many students who sign up for online classes aren’t prepared for the

difficulty added by the absence of face-to-face instructor interaction (Shore, 2020). Thus,

the researchers must come up with significant solutions to the different problems that

affects the tardiness of grade 11 students in completing their task online.

2. Describe the setting where your study is to be conducted.

Considering that there is a pandemic going on and classes are being held online,

the most suitable and safer setting for the researchers to conduct the study is in the

researchers’ homes. The aim of the study is to provide the factors for the tardiness of

Grade 11 students in completing their online tasks, and that is exactly why the setting

where the researchers will be conducting the study is exceptionally appropriate for the

case itself. The researchers conducting this study are also students who have online

classes, and because of this, the researchers get to experience and point out the

problems that can help in the case study. That is why conducting a research

perspective home study is effective, as the researchers experience first-hand the

dilemmas and complexities that students are facing in completing tasks in a digital

context especially at home. Therefore, learning gaps may be addressed.

3. What are the terms, variables, or concepts that need to be defined, clarified, or

describe to you and to your reader?

The terms that are needed to be clarified in the study are: synchronous classes,

asynchronous classes, GENYO, tardiness, and the possible problems that grade 11

students may encounter (physical, psychological, social, and internet or hardware

problems). Synchronous learning happens in real time. This means that you, your

classmates, and your instructor interact in a specific virtual place at a set time. In these

courses, instructors commonly take attendance, same as they would in a lecture hall.

DON BOSCO ACADEMY OF PAMPANGA Page 4

CASE STUDY: FACTORS TO GRADE 11 STUDENTS’
TARDINESS IN COMPLETING TASKS ONLINE

Common methods of synchronous online learning include video conferencing,

teleconferencing, live chatting, and live-streamed lectures that must be viewed in real

time. Asynchronous learning happens on your schedule. While your course of study,

instructor, or program will provide materials for reading, lectures for viewing,

assignments for completing, and exams for evaluation, you can access and satisfy

these requirements on your own schedule, so long as you meet the expected deadlines.

Common methods of asynchronous online learning include self-guided lesson modules,

pre-recorded video content, virtual libraries, lecture notes, and online discussion boards

or social media platforms (The best schools, 2020). GENYO is one of the main online

learning platforms aside from google classroom used by Don Bosco Academy

Mabalacat Pampanga which is governed by DIWA learning systems. In GENYO,

students are able to access the lessons, assessments, performance tasks, etc., that are

given by the teachers. Tardiness, according to dictionary, is the quality of being late

and can affect students by being burdened by tasks unintentionally or intentionally.

Tardiness often leads to affect one’s grades or performance in school and can further

decrease morale and productivity. Physical problems are basically health problems

that often affects the academic performance of students. "Students may experience

health concerns related to increased screen time, such as fatigue, headache." (DOH,

2020). And these health problems may lead into the students' tardiness in completing

theirs tasks online. Psychological problems are any event or occurrences that affect

one's logical reasoning, outlook in life, motivation in accomplishing a specific task, and

DON BOSCO ACADEMY OF PAMPANGA Page 5

TARDINESS IN COMPLETING TASKS ONLINE

one’s perspective to his herself in a negative manner. While in social problems, in this

new setup for learning, students are forced to stay at home and attend their classes

through the screens of their laptops, although this may be the “new normal” we cannot

deny the fact that only privileged students are comfortable and thriving in this setup.

Online learning is stressful especially with the tight deadlines where students have no

choice but to comply with, students who have trouble with their internet connections and

gadgets for online learning usually depend on their classmates for their missed classes.

This may be a problem for students who lack social skills or students who are having

difficulties with communication, as there may be a barrier that separate them from

students who are more extroverted and have the skill of communication that helps them

in interacting with their classmates, social interaction can help a student in boosting

their eagerness to finish tasks, this is why socializing through screens can be tiring

mentally and physically for a student, which may cause them to become drained,

passive in their assessments, and lack the motivation to pass projects on time. Internet

problems are issues that have caused delays implementing remote learning that

disrupts the connection between your device and the content you're trying to access

(Amadora, 2020). Hardware problems are malfunctions within the electronic circuits or

electromechanical components within your device (Davis, 2021).

4. Look for related literatures that define the main concepts of your study.

Provide at least three (3) references per concept. Provide a brief description of

each.

seems-column/article_ff1a61aa-671c-11eb-b7aa-8b749dead360.html

Description:

This article primarily discusses that the new normal of online learning, academic

achievement, and advancement of students could be at risk. According to this report,

online learning will reduce student’s achievement in their studies. Without face-to-face

teaching, this article focuses on the challenges faced by students and teachers, such as

internet connectivity issues and self-discipline among students. This article mentioned

that despite being relaxed in a learning atmosphere, all the enticing distractions in the

home environment may be damaging to a student's education: a constant urge to pick up

the gadget, open another tab to work on something else, or maybe even go back to sleep.

Also, without the assistance of teachers, students easily lose concentration on their tasks.

To succeed in online classes, students have to overcome all of these difficult distractions,

and it's more difficult than it would seem. Many students are unsuited to a huge workload,

and this leads them to fail or to be late in carrying out tasks.

CASE STUDY: FACTORS TO GRADE 11 STUDENTS’
TARDINESS IN COMPLETING TASKS ONLINE

This article mainly talks about poor time management, stating that it is one of the biggest

issues affecting the performance of online learners and hindering effective online

learning. Factors contributing to poor time management, such as lack of schedule,

distractions, multitasking, and lack of designated workspace, were stated in the article.

According to the article, these factors lead to poor time management since; (1) Lack of

a Schedule, in online learning, the teacher sets a fixed schedule wherein there’s a due

date for a certain task but not every student has self-discipline and flexibility to balance

their schedule or time. As stated in the article, the solution to this is the need to set your

own schedule to complete assignments and to balance the flexibility of online learning

with a disciplined schedule. (2) Distractions, by using their computers and the internet

to engage in online learning, online learners may be tempted by distractions. One solution

to overcome these distractions is to set aside breaks between periods of work, as

suggested in the article. (3) Multitasking, students tend to move between different

websites that may not be relevant to the task at hand, resulting in a difficult time focusing

on schoolwork. Students should focus on efficiently completing a single task at a time,

based on the article, to increase efficiency when studying online. (4) Lack of a

WorkSpace, in this time of pandemic, online learners work on their tasks at home wherein

students may find it hard to concentrate because of background noise, by family

members, chores, or television. As stated in the article, the way to fix this, online learners

should set up their workspaces that will enable them to concentrate and is far from

distractions.

Reference 3: Procrastination: the poor time management among university

students

http://ocs.editorial.upv.es/index.php/HEAD/HEAD18/paper/viewFile/8167/3802

Description:

According to this article, procrastination has been negatively associated with academic

performance. In academic context, procrastination trait includes achievement, motivation

or hope for success, planning and time management skills, work discipline, study

motivation, self-control, and cognitive study skills. Therefore, it has particularly important

consequences for students, such as waste of time, poor performance, increased stress,

anxiety, and depression. Both factors contributed to a rise in pressure due to a reduction

in time that decreases precision and hence a decrease in academic performance.

among students who are poor time managers. Also, this article stated that the significant

(pre-) condition for success in school will be self-regulation of time management, defined

as planning and effective regulation of study time. In general, this article reports that time

control has a positive effect on the results of students learning.

Reference 5: Unclear Instruction given by the Educators

https://education.seattlepi.com/problems-online-classes-1132.html

Description:

Some of the activities given by the educators during online classes are through an online

portal. It is more difficult to process instructions in an online class than in an actual

classroom. The instructors in the classroom have a direct explanation of the instructions

with direct contact with students, this is very effective for visual learners. The e-Learners

must have discipline to do their tasks assign in their online portals with reading and

understanding the instructions thoroughly than the physical learners.

Reference 6: Incompetence of others in Technology

https://education.seattlepi.com/elearning-vs-classroom-learning-1128.html

Description:

Not every student has the same knowledge in technology. Some cannot catch up to

other’s involvement in using online platforms for learning. Some are struggling with this

new normal, while others are taking this opportunity to improve their technological skills.

As for the materials needed, owning one device is not enough in online classes. To sum

it up, multiple devices are needed during this new way of learning so that the students will

be able to comply with the tasks given to them on time.

5. Determine the significance of your chosen problem. Research contextual

evidence of its “gravity”. Provide details (and references) below.

The significance of the research is to know and identify what are the reasons and

possibilities why the students are committing tardiness in completing their tasks online.

This study is to inform and to let the audience know the outcome of our research in finding

the reason on our said topic. Baticulon et al., (2020) conducted a study about the barriers

of online learning medical students faces in the Philippines in the time of Covid-19. And

some of their findings shows that the barriers that affect the academic performance of

these medical students were classified under five categories: (1) Technological, which

pertain to hardware, software, and internet connectivity; (2) Individual, which include

students’ learning styles, physical, and mental health; (3) Domestic, which are concerns

at home or within the family, including financial distress; (4) Institutional, which apply to

administration, and educator skills; and (5) community barriers, which include lockdown

restrictions, infrastructure challenges, and sociopolitical issues. And these barriers are

also evident to all students during the new normal way of learning. That is why a robust

solution is really needed. Students' tardiness is a problem that may grow big if it would

DON BOSCO ACADEMY OF PAMPANGA Page 11

CASE STUDY: FACTORS TO GRADE 11 STUDENTS’
TARDINESS IN COMPLETING TASKS ONLINE

not be solved right now. Big things come from small things, and if the students' tardiness

will not have a solution right now, chances are the students will bring it in the future which

may affect their career. Punctual children will always get success in their studies. During

school term time, punctuality ensures that they don’t miss any part of the lesson. It also

helps students manage their academic and personal life. Being punctual as a student,

you’ll find it easier to get done your work on time and thus get success in your career as

well (Orchids International School, 2020).

6. What is the general objective or overall purpose of the study?

The study of the Group 4 touches on the cause of such behavior in which grade

11 students are late in accomplishing and submitting tasks on time in an online setting.

From such topic the researchers of this study will observe the difficulties faced by grade

11 students in the aspects of physical, psychological, social, and internet or hardware

problems. From such observations, the researchers will analyze and connect the

feedback of the respondents to find a common trend, an information that will be used to

lessen the occurrences of such negative behavior in the future among grade 11

students.

7. After the problem had been solved or the research was conducted, who will be

the main beneficiaries of the research? What direct benefits will they receive from

it?

DON BOSCO ACADEMY OF PAMPANGA Page 12

TARDINESS IN COMPLETING TASKS ONLINE

After the research was conducted, many people will gain benefits from this study.

One of the most beneficial are the students. This study will aid students who are

currently struggling from online class. Schools and universities will also gain benefits

from this study as they will know how to deal with students who are suffering from a

given condition or problem. Even the Department of Education and Commission on

Higher Education may gain benefits because these institutions would be able to use

results of the study to see if the students are having trouble. Finally, other researchers

as the data from the study will be used by other researchers to serve as possible

reference in their related study.
