CASE METHOD
WHAT IS IT?
Case method is an intensive form of care delivery and was called as total
patient care. This is one of the oldest models of patient care delivery in use,
and it involves nurses overseeing almost every aspect of patient care.
Nurses plan individual treatment objectives, working in shifts to cover
everything from personal hygiene and medication to emotional support and
additional therapies and treatments.
Total patient care is a more traditional model, which focuses on a patient
receiving care from one nurse who is replaced by another nurse at the end of a
designated shift.
There are advantages to the total care nursing model, but as times have
changed, new technology has become available, and patient needs have
evolved.
Advantages:
● Patient needs are quickly met
● Close relationship between patient and nurse
● Relationship based on trust is established
● Receives holistic, un-fragmented care by only one nurse per shift
● High patient satisfaction
Disadvantages:
● May be expensive to patient if in a non acute setting
● RN may still have other patients due to floor loads
● Unsafe for a nurse to have 4+ TPC's
● RN may be more likely to be burnt-out and cut unsafe corners.
Therefore, this model is not always a viable option for healthcare settings. It
is possible that a patient may require treatment that cannot be administered
by the nurse on duty. It’s also possible that the staff-to-patient ratio available
does not support this concept.
