MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSE (MOOC)

Background Information for Learners

Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, are online courses that allow participants free access and unrestricted
participation to any course of their choice. MOOCs also provide a platform for interactive forums. It is also one of the
custom eLearning methodologies that encourages self-paced learning which remains focused on the skills that the learners
wish to hone.
Although MOOCs don’t always provide an academic credit, they give students a useful grounding in the subject
matter and may provide necessary background for further education or certification.
The word MOOC was coined in 2008 by Dave Cormier from the University of Prince Edward Island for a course
offered by the University of Manitoba “Connectivism and Connective Knowledge”. There were 25 tuition-paying students
from University and 2,300non-paying students from the general public who took the course online.
In 2011, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) OpenCourseWare(OCW) became the first large
collections of MOOC resources made available by the University. In 2012 MIT and Harvard spearheaded the edX
initiative for the promotion of MOOCs.

TWO CATEGORIES OF MOOC

1. cMOOCs are MOOCs that allow for dynamic development of study material. That is, instead of having a pre-
planned set of reading materials and courseware, the material will be developed through online discussions and
collaborations among learners taking the course across the globe.

2. xMOOCs, on the other hand, believe in the conventional approach where the courses are well-structured with
pre-selected reading and reference materials.

The Advantages of MOOCs:

1. Courses are offered for free

2. Access to courses offered by professors at the top schools
3. Courses are available to a vast and diverse audience across the globe
4. Learners’ performance can be monitored easily using the data captured during the start of courses
5. Both professors and learners get world-wide exposure, thus improving pedagogical techniques and knowledge sharing.
6. Can be used as a tool in a blended learning program, where students can access more information than what is provided
in the class
7. Learn from peers around the world.
8. Prepare you academically for college.
9. Let you test out your major before committing.
The Disadvantages of MOOCs:

1. Cannot be used a credit-earning course at universities

2. Difficulties in tracking the students’ assignments and involvement
3. Learners with disabilities and a poor Internet connection cannot use MOOCs.
4. Can have a language barrier while offering MOOCs
5. Cannot provide for personalized courseware and attention from a tutor
