LUKSONG BAKA

Luksong Baka literally means “Jumping over the Cow”. The game can be
played individually or in groups. When played as a team, the leader of the team is
called the nanay and the rest of the players anak. The game improves the players’
jumping skills as well as agility, balance, strength, and power.

Objective: Players to successfully jump over the baka (cow), also called
the tayȃ or “it”, without hitting any part of the latter’s body or
falling over him.

MECHANICS:
1. In choosing the baka or the taya, all players do hompyang or any other
manuhan of their choice.
2. The baka or the taya then assumes the first level or crouch position and the
players will take turns to jump over him.
3. The baka now raises the level of difficulty and do position 2, standing on the
knees and the hands. The illustration below shows the progress of the different
positions of the baka: In position 4, the jumper may place both hands at the
back of the baka when jumping over.

4. Once a player of a team fails to jump a particular height, the players will not be
allowed to jump the next height. The “mother” of the team will make up the
missed jump of the of the other players per level. If she fails, the team loses
the turn.
LUKSONG TINIK

Luksong Tinik literally means “jumping over thorns” in English. It is played


outdoors and can be played individually or with two opposing team of equal number
of players. When played as a team, the leader of the team is called the nanay and
the rest of the players anak. The game improves the jumping and leaping skills of
the players.

Objective: For all players in a team to jump over the height of the piled
hands of the opposing team. A player must avoid hitting the
piled hands with any part of his body or clothing.

MECHANICS:
1. The play starts with a manuhan on who will go first.
2. Two players will serve as taya (or base) and face each other to make the tinik
by stacking their arms and feet on top of each other.
3. The first level will just be one foot forward and touching the others foot. The
other team players jump over the feet.
4. After just one foot, another foot is stack on top, then another foot and the
other foot of the base. Then one hand with palm and fingers open wide
above the feet, then two hands, then three then four hands. Additional
hands can be placed by other players to make a higher tinik.
5. When all players have jumped over without touching the hands of the base
players, the game is repeated over again.
6. If one jumper touches the hands of the taya with any part of the body, the
players loses the turn and becomes the new taya.

1. Play both games – Luksong Baka and Luksong Tinik. What are the
similarities and differences while playing the game? What game do you
like better?

2. Introduce innovations and variations on how to play both games to make it


more enjoyable and relevant in the present times. Make new objectives
and mechanics of the games.
