The National Diploma is an intensive yet
informative and enjoyable course which is run over 38
days including examinations and revision days. The
course is run on a day release basis to allow dele-
gates to manage the course around their work com-
mitments. The 38 day total is divided between three
course units which means you can decide how long
you would like to take to complete the course and
qualification. We run one full programme a year and
you can start with any of the Units, however most del-
egates opt to start their study with Unit A, this covers
the Management of Health and Safety along with the
UK legal framework. However you can start with
Unit B, workplace agents such as chemicals and
noise and Unit C which deals with workplace issues
such as fire and electricity if the course dates fit into
your schedule.
In 2016 the syllabus was updated to keep it in line
with the requirements of industry and to meet the
needs of the current day health and safety practition-
er.
Study programmes are flexible. Options include:
• Studying A, then B&C in parallel so that the
course is completed in a 10 month period.
• Studying A, B and then C with the course and
tutorials spread over 18 months.
• Studying A,B,C with one unit taken per year.
• Studying B & C in parallel then Unit A so the
course will be completed in a 10 month period
When you register for the Diploma with us and
Nebosh you have a 5 year period to complete your
diploma, which allows for breaks of study to be taken
for personal or work reasons. If you want to discuss

Unit A: Managing Health and Safety

When you decide to start your course of study, you can
book on each unit one at a time or you can book our
flexi course where you benefit from the cheaper price
but have the flexibility to select your own pace of study.
Remember that the exams are only held twice a year,
in January and July, with our tutorials leading to these
exam sittings.
The Diploma can form the basis of a professional
qualification for health and safety practitioners. Along
with relevant experience, successful completion can
lead to Chartered Membership of the Institution of Oc-
cupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
The Diploma has been designed to provide knowledge
and understanding to aid the development of
competency in the field of occupational safety and
health. It covers a core of common knowledge which is
essential to any safety professional whatever industry
they work in.
The course is structured around four units:-
• Unit A Managing Health & Safety
• Unit B Hazardous Agents in the Workplace
• Unit C Workplace & Work Equipment Safety
• Unit DNI Workplace Based Assignment
The course requires approximately 243 hours tuition
and 257 hours of private study but this is sub divided in
to the different course elements and units. Our key
tutorial team, led by Jackie Cambridge, are all
exprienced presenters and practitioners in health and
safety.
There are comprehensive manuals of handouts provid-
ed but, due to the depth of the course, online resources
including a number of podcasts. Delegates are
expected to complete revision questions and exercises
outside the tutorials.

Who is the course designed for?
Health and safety practitioners, advisers and officers
who wish to develop their knowledge and skills. Dele-
gates must have either completed the Nebosh Certifi-
cate or a similar level three H&S qualification to be eli-
gible for this programme.
Why Study With Cambridge Safety?

the success of our Nebosh General Certificate, Con-
struction Certificate, Environmental Certificate, National
Diploma and Environmental Diploma courses. Equally,
we try to ensure that learning is an enjoyable
experience. Unlike many centres we use our own em-
ployees and do not rely on high numbers of external
tutors. This ensures the message given throughout the
course is consistent and the courses run as seamless
programmes, not a set of unrelated training days. We
produce our own study material to ensure the handouts
truly support the tutorials provided and are kept up to

Flexible Study
We run one course a year with but you can start study-
ing either February or September.

Examination and Assessment
Nebosh announce the examination dates a year in
advance so as soon as these are published we are
able to set your course dates.

Successful completion of the course includes a work-
based assignment (12,000 - 20,000 words) and three
examinations (one each for Units A to C). The as-
signment, known as Unit D is completed after study-
ing units A to C as it includes elements from each.
Delegates will have the opportunity to attend a work-
shop on report writing and the assignment in order to
enable them to gather relevant information through-
out their period study.
Support for the Unit DNI
As an integral part of our course you will also attend
a Unit DNI practical workshop, this is the fourth unit
of the qualification where you are required to com-
plete a H&S review of an organisation and present
your findings in the form of a management report.
The workshop briefs you on the scope of the project
so delegates can start planning this during their
course of study. The assignment can be submitted
once all three unit examinations have been taken.
There are four submission dates annually.
The assignment must be submitted within the 5 year
registration period and our support does not end
when you finish attending the tutorials. We offer sup-
port until you submit your unit DNI which includes
tutor support and the use of our well stocked re-
source room of research material.

Revision and Support
As well as tackling the extensive syllabus and
standards set by Nebosh, the course will also give
assistance and practical guidance on examination
As an integral part of the course we also run an
examination techniques workshop. This session
reviews the command words used by Nebosh as
an examination body and gives examples of ques-
tions and answers to show the depth and scope of
answers required for a diploma level qualification.
In addition, examination style questions will be
completed within the tutorials as case studies.
Written work will be completed to ensure delegates
are able to demonstrate their effective examination
answering technique, with questions marked by
real Nebosh examiners to ensure the feedback
given is valid and assist in any improvements re-
quired.
To succeed at any qualification it is essential to
have a good understanding of the qualification syl-
labus and material and, just as importantly, know
how to answer questions, as it can be easy to write
a lengthy answer and yet not actually answer the
question set.
