BUILDING DRAWING AND DESIGN

UNIT 2 – Paper 2

2 hours 30 minutes

SECTION A

MODULE 1 STRUCTURAL DRAWINGS

Answer ALL questions from this section.

1) Figure I show a simply supported beam loaded with two point loads (PLs) and a uniformly
distributed load (UDL).
10kN

30 kN/m

1.2 m 3.6 m 1.0 m

Figure 1. Simply supported beam

(a) Calculate the magnitude of the reactions. [4 marks]

(b) Produce the shear force diagram (SFD) for the beam, using a graphical method.
[10 marks]

(c) Identify the point where the shear force SF = 0 and calculate the maximum bending
moment
(BMmax) corresponding to this point. 16 marks]

2. Figure 2 is a floor plan for a building.

FLOOR PLAN
Scale: I: 100

Figure 2. Floor plan

(a) Produce a reinforcement detail plan of the concrete roof slab for the building in
Figure 2 at a scale of 1:20. Use a slab thickness of 150 mm and show the main
distribution and 'over support' bars along with the bar sizes, type, and spacing
specifications.
[12 marks]

(b) Produce a section through the slab drawn at a scale of I :20, showing all details.
[8 marks]

SECTION B

MODULE 2 — BUILDING MATERIALS AND PROCESSESS

Answer ALL questions from this section.

3. (a) Name TWO types of Portland cement and, for EACH type named, clearly explain
the situation in which it is suitable for use. [16 marks]

(b) With the aid of a flow chart, explain ONE of the following processes for producing
cement:

(i) The wet process

(ii) The dry process [16 marks]

(c) Table 1 below gives the specifications for the coarse aggregates and fine aggregates to
be used in a mix.

TABLE 1. COARSE AND FINE AGGREGATE SPECIFICATIONS

Coarse Aggregates Fine Aggregates
Moisture content 1.5 % Moisture content 4.5%
Water absorption rate 0.5% Water absorption rate 0.7%
Specific gravity 2.6 Specific gravity 2.7

The coarse aggregates are rounded and the mix is of medium workability with an
aggregate cement ratio of 3:8 and a proportion of fine:coarse aggregate of 2: l . Type
I Portland cement with a specific gravity of 3.15 is to be used. Use the information
provided to design a mix for a total damp aggregate weight of 30 kg and a water
cement ratio of 0.4. [8 marks]

4 You are the newly appointed site manager for a construction company. Your company is undecided
as to which quarry to choose for the supply of aggregates.

(a) Explain the process of sampling aggregates. [4 marks]

F

(b) What are the TWO main factors that must be taken into consideration when sampling
and testing aggregates? [2 marks]

(c) Explain the impact that particle shape, surface texture, size and texture classification
have on concrete mix. [6 marks]

(d) Using diagrams where necessary, explain the winning and processing of aggregates.
18 marks]

SECTION C

MODULE 3 — MANAGEMENT AND DESIGN

Answer ALL questions from this section.

The network shown in Figure 3 represents a section of a project being undertaken by a

subcontractor. The number of equipment (mixers) required for each activity is also shown in
Figure 3; for example, 2E = 2 equipment. The subcontractor does not want to use more than
eight mixers on the job. However, the main contractor would like the job to be completed in
27 weeks to phase in his operations.

The critical path

(a) Produce a bar chart and resource histogram to represent the latest start times for each
activity in Table 2. [12 marks]

TABLE 2: ACTIVITIES
Resources LS
Activity Duration ES Float

A 4 2 0 0 0

B 6 3 4 13 9

D 2 4 4 23 19
C 9 4 4 4 0

E 3 3 10 22 12
G 10 2 13 13 0

J 2 1 13 25 12
H 4 2 23 23 0

(c) Using resource smoothing, schedule the start of each activity so that ONLY eight
mixers are utilized each week. The project should not exceed 27 weeks.

6. Develop a line of balance (LOB) for a road project that consists of 20 sections. The target output
rate for the project is three sections per week. A typical working week includes five 8-hour
days. The construction of a single section consists of the following five sequential activities
listed in Table 3.

A 110 3
B 320 8
C 365 9
D 35 2
E 210 5

Calculate the following and use the answers to complete Table 3 for activities A to E.
(a) Theoretical gang size at the chosen output rate (G) [4 marks]

(b) Actual gang size (Ga) and actual output rate (Ra) [8 marks]

(c) Actual activity duration for one unit 14 marks]
