Scientists have looked at the relationship between violent films and children’s behaviour for
years. They are now studying the effect of computer games on children. Lyn Hender, senior
lecturer in educational psychology, focuses on how these games influence the way teenagers
think. She looked at thirteen and fourteen-year-old students playing fantasy games on computers.
She found that both weak and strong students clearly used complex thinking skills. “I think we
never really see the advantages of such games in education. Parents and teachers do not think of
these as being educationally useful,” Dr. Hender said. “I think we only see the aggression and
violence in them. Of course, some games are like that. But the majority are non-violent games that
are good for developing the mind.” The students played a game called “Get The Money,” in
which a group has to make money in various ways. For this game you need to think in almost the
same way that you would in a sports game. “This is not an easy game… actually; you have to use
logic as well as changing how you think.” Dr. Hender stated. Teachers were surprised to see that
teenagers whom they thought were weak students were as successful as their stronger classmates.
Sometimes they were even better. “One weaker student completed a complex card game in which
you had about nine different things to remember”, Dr. Hender said. “I discovered she did it very
easily, but some of the students I thought were strong had problems. I found that none of the
students had any problems concentrating for a long time. They were determined to understand

One way of training for your future occupation in Germany is by pursuing a dual vocational
training programme. Such programmes offer plenty of opportunity for on-the-job training and
work experience. Programmes usually last between two and three and a half years and comprise
theoretical as well as practical elements. You will spend one or two days a week, or several weeks
at once, at a vocational school where you will acquire the theoretical knowledge that you will
need in your future occupation. The rest of the time will be spent at a company. There you get to
apply your newly acquired knowledge in practice, for example by learning to operate machinery.
You will get to know what your company does, learn how it operates and find out if you can see
yourself working there after completing your training.
This combination of theory and practice gives you a real head start into your job: by the
time you have completed your training, you will not only have the required technical knowledge,
but you will also have hands-on experience in your job. There are around 350 officially recognised
training programmes in Germany, so chances are good that one of them will suit your interests

For hundreds of years, giving flowers have been a social means of communication. In the
United States, flowers are often given during rites of passage, for commemorating special
occasions or as a heartfelt gift between loved ones and friends. Flower gifting also occurs in most
countries around the world. However, the meanings and traditions often vary.
While students traditionally gave their favorite teacher an apple in past years, in China,
teachers are given flowers. Peonies are by far the flower most often given in China. They are also
quite popularly used for weddings. Strangely, potted plants are not considered a pleasant gift
among Asian cultures. The people believe that like a plant confined by a pot, the gift symbolizes
a binding or restriction.
In Russia, in lieu of giving birthday presents, the guest of honor receives a single flower
or an unwrapped bouquet. Floral arrangements or baskets are not given. Russians celebrate a
holiday known as Woman's Day. Traditional gifts include red roses, hyacinths or tulips. When
there is a funeral or other occasion where someone wishes to express sympathy, carnations, lilies
or roses are given in circular configurations, which signify the transition of birth, life and death

GREASE
'Greasy spoons' very rarely appear in guidebooks, but they are an essential part of life in the
UK, especially for people living in the bigger cities. These small restaurants are so common that
they often go unnoticed, but if they were removed, the country would be on its knees. In
London, the capital city of the greasy spoon, there are hundreds of them, fuelling the population
with bacon, egg and sausage. Greasy spoon cafes are so called because any cutlery that comes
into contact with the food they offer is immediately coated with a sticky, greasy layer of lard.

The body of primitive man, a faraway and primitive man called Homo sapiens, so far as
we can reconstruct from the fragmentary evidence we have, was exactly like our own, and his
brain was as big as that of modem man and quite as complicated in structure. His intelligence
and his ability to learn were probably as great as that of the average man today, but he had a very
meager inheritance of knowledge.
The use of tools and weapons of a primitive sort was probably passed on from the
subhuman creatures, who had learned how to break stones and used the sharp-edged pieces for
cutting and scraping, and how to use a short, heavy stick for a chub and a long, pointed one for
a spear. The subhuman creatures knew how to make use of fire when they found it, but they
didn't know how to make it.
