STATICS 213

Resultant of Force Systems

MODULE 2.2 and 2.3

• Objectives:

1. Gain a better understanding of the meaning of

equivalent single force.

1. Solve problems on resultant of force system

using parallelogram method and polygon
method.

• Problems:
▫ Two forces P and Q act on a bolt as shown.
Determine the magnitude and direction of the
resultant force.
• Solution:
▫ Draw lines parallel to the forces so as to form a
parallelogram and draw a diagonal passing from the
point of origin.
• Consider Triangle A-B-O

▫ Solve for Angle A

Angle A = 180˚+20˚-45˚
= 155˚

• Problems:
▫ A disabled automobile is pulled by means of two
ropes as shown. If the resultant of the two forces
on the rope is a 300 N force parallel to the axis of
automobile, determine the tension in each rope.
• Solution:
▫ Construct the parallelogram and draw its
diagonal. The diagonal is equal to the resultant of
the two tensile forces (T1 & T2) and is equal to
300N.

• Problems:
▫ Given:
● F1 =20N,due East
● F2 =30N,30˚N of E
● F3 =40N,60˚W of N

▫ Required:
Compute the resultant completely.
• Solution:
▫ Construct the polygon by using the tip-to-
tail method.
▫ Divide the Polygon into triangles
Use triangles C-O-A
and A-B-C

Or

Use triangles A-O-B

and B-O-C

Consider Triangle A-B-C

Consider triangle C-O-A

• Problems:
▫ For the system of forces shown, determine
the resultant completely.
• Solution
▫ Construct the polygon by using the tip-to-
tail method.

Consider triangle B-C-D

Consider triangle A-B-D
