Police Officers Save 50 Fishermen in a Search, Rescue and

Retrieval Operation
Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City – Samar Police Provincial Office under
the leadership of the newly installed Provincial Director, PCOL PETER U
LIMBAUAN, applauds the men and women of Sto. Nino Municipal Police
Station headed by their Chief of Police, PLT MANUEL O RICALDE, for their
heroic acts in saving the lives of fishermen who have been floating for several
hours in the seawaters of this island municipality during the onslaught of
Typhoon Jolina.

In the morning of September 7, 2021, while personnel of Sto. Niño MPS was
conducting clearing operation, they received a phone call from a concerned citizen
who overheard someone shouting for help in the seawaters of Brgy. Basud.
Immediately, police officers boarded a motorboat and were able to rescue three (3)
fishermen. Then, two (2) lifeless bodies who were later identified as Alejandro
Solayao and Sanieboy Ebayan, both residents of Tacloban City, were retrieved at
seawaters of Brgy. Buenavista on or about 4:30 PM of September 7, 2021.

Police Officers in the Municipality of Sto. Niño immediately coordinated with

the Police Stations of the nearby island towns regarding the incident. With the LGU
and other members of the community, Search, Rescue and Retrieval Operation was
immediately initiated by Sto. Niño MPS for more than 13 hours.

An Emergency Health Station for rescued typhoon victim was established in

the Municipal Gym/Covered Court to provide first aid and immediate medical
attention to the wounded and rescued fishermen who were then provided with hot
meals, dry clothes, slippers and other basic needs.
An opportunity to save one life is a great joy while rescuing fifty-two (52) more
lives is indeed a great blessing. Sadly, one (1) of the rescued fishermen, identified
as Joseph Imnas was declared Dead on Arrival (DOA) by Dr. Radcliffe R. Royo,
Duty Physician while Benedicto De Paz died as he was about to be transported for
medical attention.

As of September 8, 2021, all fifty (50) rescued survivors and remains of four
(4) fishermen who boarded nine (9) different motorboats destroyed by Typhoon
Jolina were already transported to their respective places of residence.

“In behalf of the Philippine National Police, thru Samar Police Provincial
Office, we are greatly indebted with the unified effort of the Advocacy Groups and
Force Multipliers of Sto. Niño MPS who immediately provided assistance during this
time of calamity. Likewise, the Local Government Unit of Sto. Niño quickly acted on
the needs for the search, rescue and retrieval operation. Further, the swift and timely
response of the police officers in this situation saved the lives of these fishermen and
they made it possible for them to return to their families safely.” PCOL LIMBAUAN
stated.
