1. Discuss the different modes of transportation.

(Duroja, Jessie Jade S., BSCE 3A-1) Transportation is the movement of humans, animals, and
goods from one location to another which have been a huge part of our everyday life. It has
different modes which includes land, water, air, pipeline, cable and intermodal. Land
transportation has two main forms: the rail transport and road transport. The rail transport also
known as train transport which is a means of transport o vehicles which run on tracks (rails or
railroads) and one of the most important, commonly used, and very cost effective modes of
commuting and goods carriage over long, as well as short distances. The road transport forms an
essential part of any transport activity as a supplementary and complementary mode of transport
to complete movement by other modes of transport. Water transportation is one of the oldest
modes of transportation. It is the intentional movement by water over large distances. It has two
main forms, the inland water transport which is used mainly for transport within a country
through rivers and canals, and the oceanic transport which transports goods from one country to
another. Air transportation is considered as new mode of transportation. It is the movement of
passengers and cargo by aircraft such as airplanes and helicopters and has become the primary
means of common-carrier traveling. It also provides a communication or medical link, which is
sometimes vitals, between the different groups of people being served. Pipeline shipping is not a
formal mode of transportation in the traditional sense. However, it is important to acknowledge
for its importance in the current fossil fuel market. Pipeline shipping is not a formal mode of
transportation in the traditional sense. However, it is important to acknowledge for its
importance in the current fossil fuel market. Traditionally, the transporting of oil was
accomplished by rail but oil and gas companies are quickly turning to pipeline shipping because
of increased safety and efficiency.  Cable transport is a broad class of transport modes that have
cables as foundation for transporting things, people, or vehicles. Lastly, Intermodal
transportation is the use of more than one mode of transport to move a shipment to its
destination.
2. Differentiate the railroad from highway mode of transportation
(Duroja, Jessie Jade S., BSCE 3A-1) The railroad or the rail transport is one of the most
dependable modes of transport in terms of safety and speed. Unlike from the highway mode of
transportation or the road transport, its greatest advantage is that it is the least affected by usual
weather turbulences like rain or fog. It is more organized for it has fixed routes and schedules,
and its speed can go over long distances which can be the best choice to avoid traffics. It is a
cheaper mode of transport and can carry a large capacity of people. However, it still has a lot
of disadvantage. As the railroad has fixed routes, it lacks flexibility, cannot provide door to
door services as it is tied to a particular track, unsuitable for short distance and small load and
it is just available to certain area, no rural services. Unlike for the highway mode of
transportation, it is perfect for any distance and can provide great services.
3. Describe how a cable railway functions and its set up
(Duroja, Jessie Jade S., BSCE 3A-1) The most common use for a cable railway is to move
vehicles on a steeply graded line that is too steep for conventional locomotives to operate on -
this form of cable railway is often called an incline or inclined plane. It uses
a cable, rope or chain to haul trains. The cable may be driven or passive, and items may be
moved by pulling, sliding, sailing, or by drives within the object being moved on cableways.
Often used in mountainous areas where cable haulage can overcome large differences in
elevation.
4. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of air transport from water transport
(Duroja, Jessie Jade S., BSCE 3A-1) Water transport is considered as one of the oldest modes
of transportation and Air transport is considered as new compared to other modes of
transportation. The advantage of water transport is the disadvantage of the air transport and the
advantage of the air transport is the disadvantage of water transport. Water transport can carry
more shipment at reduced cost over longer distances unlike for the air transport, it is a costly
affair and is limited by lift capacity on which goods up to certain load (weight) can be
transported by aircrafts. Air transport is very well known for its high speed in which by air,
the time required may be just a few hours which may be days by other modes of transport and
its greatest advantage unlike for the water transport, it has limited range of operation and
speed, and isn’t all that flexible.
5. Identify a system of intermodal transportation that is existing in the whole island of Panay
(Duroja, Jessie Jade S., BSCE 3A-1) Intermodal Road-RoRo Transport is a system of
intermodal transportation that is existing in the whole island of Panay.
