1. The left bank of the Ganga River between Munger Ghat and Tikarampur village in Bihar has been eroding for decades, damaging infrastructure and farmland across three districts.
2. The proposed anti-erosion works along a 7.3 km stretch will include slope pitching with geo-bags and a gabion launching apron to protect an area benefiting 200,000 people and 3000 hectares of land, at an estimated cost of Rs. 5,605.62 lakh.
3. Site visits by officials resulted in some modifications to the design, including focusing protections only on the most critical erosion locations and exploring other methods like porcupines or jhankis

Presentation on Construction of anti-erosion works in between km 0.00 to km 7.30 of left bank of river Ganga near Mathar Diara ( Munger Ghat to Tikarampur) in the districts of Begusarai, Khagaria and Munger (Bihar)
Cost of the Project : Rs. 5605.62 Lakh
(Price level:2015) Salient Features Name of River / Bank - Ganga / Left bank Name of District / State - Begusarai, Khagaria and Munger/ Bihar Purpose of the scheme - Anti-erosion works
Benefitted Area - 3000 ha
Benefitted Population - 2,00,000 Design Discharge - 67000 cumecs Design HFL - 39.26 m LWL - 29.50 m Estimated Cost - Rs. 5605.62 Lakh B.C. Ratio - 1.39:1
Proposed period of - 2016-17 & 2017-18
Completion 1. The river Ganga is eroding the left bank making continuous loops after loops for last several decades in between Munger railway bridge piers as 1.30 km to 6.07 km at Tikarampur village in Mathar Diara.
2. Infrastructure and agricultural lands lying in the three
districts namely, Munger, Begusarai and Khagaria are being damaged by the flood of the Ganga river.
3. There is no embankment on the left bank of river
Ganga in between railway bridge, Munger Ghat to Bunny village. The NH-31, which is passing at about 6 -8 km from the left bank of river edge, acts as an embankment . Proposed Work 1. Slope pitching with four layers of geo-bag; and
2. 21.60 m wide and 1.076 m thick launching apron in P.P rope
Gabion of size 1.80 m x 1.80 m x 0.5 m in a length of 4770 m with end anchor 60 m in U/s and 30 m in D/s. Changes / Modification during Appraisal/Field Visit: Site inspection by officers of GFCC along with concerned field officials of Govt. of Bihar was conducted on 17.01.2016 and following observations were sent to State Govt. : 1. It was observed that river at some locations is eroding the natural banks between 1.3 Km to 7.3 Km (about 6 Km) from pillar of railway bridge on left bank of the river Ganga. In view of this, anti-erosion works may be taken up only at the locations which are the most critical.
2. It was advised to explore possibility for providing
porcupine, jhanki / bed bars in the remaining reach to induce siltation. Contd… Changes / Modification during Appraisal based on Field Visit: 3. It was advised to review the value of Design discharge adopted as 68000 cumecs for this scheme seemed to be inconsistent as the design discharge for protection work for village Patther tola to Kamla Kani u/s of spur No. 12 (estimated cost Rs. 112.2547 crore) and anti erosion work from Hardeo tola to Khatti (estimated cost Rs. 113.9567 crore), which are lying in the D/s of the proposed scheme were adopted as 65000 cumecs and 68400 cumecs respectively. 4. In view of the above observations, the value of design discharge for the scheme has now been taken as 67000 cumecs by the project authority.
