LEARNER WORKBOOK
Qualification information
Each year approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health condition and at least 1 in 6 employees experience
common mental health problems in the workplace. Research has shown that work is the biggest cause of stress which can stop people
performing at their best. Mental health conditions are often hidden due to stigma and fear of discrimination and research has shown that
a culture of fear and silence around mental health is costly to employers. The HSE guidance 'First aid needs assessment’ refers to mental
health in the workplace.
On the course you will learn to recognise a range of mental health conditions, how to start a supportive conversation and when and how to
signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help. You will know how to recognise and manage stress and understand the impact of
substance abuse.
You will learn about the first aid action plan for mental health, be able to put it in place and know how to implement a positive mental
health culture in the workplace.
You will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals but will gain the
knowledge to identify when a person may have a condition and know where they can go to get help.
The qualification consists of one mandatory unit which you must successfully complete to achieve the qualification.

TRAINER/ASSESSOR ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE
FAA LEVEL 2 AWARD IN FIRST AID FOR MENTAL HEALTH (RQF)
AWARD IN FIRST AID FOR MENTAL HEALTH AT SCQF LEVEL 5
Trainer/Assessors must adhere to all FAA assessment requirements. This guidance has been created to standardise the
assessment process for all Centres delivering FAA qualifications ensuring that learners, regardless of their Training Provider
or Trainer/Assessor, are assessed to the same standard.
It is the responsibility of the Trainer/Assessor to ensure that a learner has the knowledge and skills required to achieve the
qualification which they may subsequently use in the workplace.
To be awarded the FAA Award in First Aid for Mental Health, a learner must successfully pass both the written assessment
paper and the practical scenario.
Practical scenario
Learners must successfully demonstrate the application of the first aid action plan for mental health by completing the
scenario as detailed on the Practical Assessment Record with additional information in this guidance. Reasonable prompting
by the Trainer/Assessor is acceptable but Trainer/Assessors must be confident of the learner’s competence and knowledge
before marking the scenario as completed. Trainer/Assessors must ensure that learners are aware of when they are being
assessed.
Written assessment
The Trainer/Assessor must be present, and the assessment completed under exam conditions. All reference materials such
as manuals and flipchart notes must be out of view and mobile phones switched off.
There should be enough space between learners to avoid collusion. Learners must not communicate with each other during
the assessment and any form of cheating, plagiarism or collusion will disqualify a learner from taking any further part in the
assessment. Answers must be the learner’s own work. Please refer to the FAA Plagiarism and Collusion Policy.
Learners have a maximum of 40 minutes to complete the assessment paper and should indicate to the Trainer/Assessor
when completed, remaining seated.
The Trainer/Assessor must mark and score the assessment following this guidance. A learner must not mark their own, or
another learner’s assessment. A learner will need to achieve a minimum of 20 correct answers out of a possible 27 to pass
the written assessment.
In this guidance FAA give the correct answers to the multiple choice questions and required and example answers for
other questions. If FAA has given example answers and a learner gives an alternative answer or uses alternative wording,
a Trainer/Assessor should use their professional judgement and subject knowledge to decide if the alternative answer or
wording is correct.

Referring a learner
If a learner does not achieve the minimum 20 correct answers and/or does not successfully complete the practical scenario,
and the Trainer/Assessor judges that due to the learner’s performance and competence shown during the course, additional
oral questioning is not appropriate, the learner should be referred to attend another course to retrain. Referral should be
documented in the assessment feedback box.
PRACTICAL SCENARIO - Application of the first aid action plan for mental health
To demonstrate competence in this scenario learners must approach a person they suspect has a mental health condition,
initiate a supportive conversation completing each step listed within the scenario on the Practical Assessment Record with
additional guidance below.
First aid action plan for mental health
• Check for significant risk of suicide or harm
Learners should look for signs of significant distress including suicidal thoughts and emotions. Learners should ask
appropriate questions and gauge the risk of suicide or harm based on the responses.
• Adopt non-judgemental communication skills
Learners should pay full attention to how the person is saying they are feeling. They should demonstrate acceptance of the
person’s thoughts and emotions displaying empathy and giving the person as much time as they need to express how they
are feeling. ‘Open’ questions should be used to gather as much information about the situation as possible.
• Reassure and provide information
Learners should let the person know that they are there to support them and they are not alone. Learners should explain
that it is good to share their feelings and, without diagnosing any condition, provide appropriate information such as how
common mental health conditions are.
• Encourage appropriate professional support and self-help strategies
Learners should encourage the person to seek support and provide information on self-help strategies. Professional support
such as their GP, appropriate charity organisations or certified peer support services should be recommended.
Self-help advice can include being physically active, having enough sleep, eating healthily, socialising and connecting with
others, self-help books and websites, relaxation techniques and avoidance of drugs and alcohol.
Learners should remind the person that this does not replace professional help and support which should always be their
best initial option.
