What is It

To create a good embroidered piece, we have to consider Principles of

Designs and Elements of Design.

Principles of Design
A good embroidered article is produced when you know how to combine colors.
Harmony ➢ is the repetition of shapes, line,
form, shape and size

Proportion ➢ is the relationship in size between

a part and the whole

Balance ➢ is the equal and unequal color

shape and size of the design

Rhythm ➢ is the movement of pattern and

line

Emphasis ➢ is where your eyes bring to the

most important part of the design
or the center of interest.

Elements of Design
Line Texture Color

1. Line

In terms of art, line is considered to be a moving dot. It has an endless number of

uses in the creation of art.

Line can control an viewer's eye. It can describe edges. It can indicate form as
well as movement. It can also indicate value and a light source in drawing.

When line is used for value or shading, we most typically see it used in the form of
hatching or cross hatching. Although these are arguably the most common forms of
using line for adding value, there is an endless number of ways that it can be used.

A simple way of thinking of a line is to imagine a point that moves...

2. Texture

Texture is one of seven elements of art. It is used to describe the way a three-
dimensional work actually feels when touched. In two-dimensional work, such as
painting, it may refer to the visual "feel" of a piece.

At its most basic, texture is defined as a tactile quality of an object's surface. It

appeals to our sense of touch, which can evoke feelings of pleasure, discomfort, or
familiarity. Artists use this knowledge to elicit emotional responses from people who
view their work. The reasons for doing so vary greatly, but texture is a fundamental
element in many pieces of art.

3. Color

Color may be cool, warm, bright or dull. Choosing the right color will greatly affect
the appearance of your finished project. Below is a color wheel consisting of twelve
colors which will give you an idea to make successful choice of color

6
Color Wheel
There are also definitions (or categories) of colors based on the color wheel.
We begin with a 3-part color wheel.

1. Primary Colors: Red, yellow and blue.

In traditional color theory (used in paint and pigments), primary colors are the 3
pigment colors that cannot be mixed or formed by any combination of other colors. All
other colors are derived from these 3 hues.
2. Secondary Colors: Green, orange and purple.
These are the colors formed by mixing the primary colors.

3. Tertiary Colors: Yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-

green & yellow-green.
These are the colors formed by mixing a primary and a secondary color. That's
why the hue is a two-word name, such as blue-green, red-violet, and yellow-orange.

7
What’s More

Activity 4
Directions: Identify the classification of colors. Write Primary, Secondary and
Tertiary before the number.
__________________________ 1. Violet
__________________________ 2. Red
__________________________ 3. Orange
__________________________ 4. Blue-green
