I. Read the paragraph below and do the tasks that follow. (20 points)
They were happy days those of Oliver's recovery. Everything was so quiet, and neat, and orderly,
everybody so kind and gentle, that after the noise and turbulence in the midst of which he had always
lived, it seemed like heaven itself. He was no sooner strong enough to put his clothes on properly, than Mr.
Brownlow caused a complete new suit, and a new cap, and a new pair of shoes, to be provided for him. As
Oliver was told that he might do what he liked with the old clothes, he gave them to a servant who had
been very kind to him, and asked her to sell them to a Jew and keep the money for herself. This she very
readily did; and, as Oliver looked out of the parlour window, and saw the Jew roll them up in his bag and
walk away, he felt quite delighted to think that they were safely gone and that there was no possible danger
of his ever being able to wear them again. They were sad rags, to tell the truth; and Oliver had never had a
new suit before.
One evening about a week later after the affair of the picture, as he was sitting talking to Mrs
Bedwin, there came a message down from Mr. Brownlow, that if Oliver Twist felt pretty well, he should
like to see him in his study, and talk to him a little while.
'Bless us, and save us! Wash your hands, and let me part your hair nicely for you, child,' said Mrs.
Bedwin. 'Dear heart alive! If we had known he would have asked for you, we would have put you a clean
collar on, and made you as smart as sixpence!'
(Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens)
A. Answer the following questions. 8 points

2. Why did Oliver decide to give his clothes away?
3. How did Oliver feel when he saw that his clothes had been given to a Jew?
4. Why did Mrs. Bedwin want Oliver to look clean and tidy?
II. Use the word given in brackets to form a word that fits in each gap. 10 points
Now, the fact was that, in the inmost recesses of his own heart, Mr. Grimwig was 1. ……. (STRONG)
disposed to admit that Oliver's appearance and manner were 2. ……. (USUAL) prepossessing. But he had
a strong appetite for contradiction, 3. ……. (SHARP) on this occasion by the finding of the orange peel;

whether the housekeeper was in the habit of counting the plates at night; because, if she didn't find a
tablespoon or two missing some sunshiny morning, why, he would be content to - and so forth.

III. Read the text below and think of the word which best fits in each gap. Use only one word in each
gap. 10 points
Workers (1)……. believe in their abilities do better in part because that belief motivates (2) ……. to work
harder and longer and to persist through difficulties. We typically avoid situations or fields (3) ……. which
we fear we might fail; even if we actually have the abilities (4) ……. takes to succeed in a job, if we lack

thought "I can't do this" is crippling.
One of (7) ……. more common traits found in workers who lack self-confidence is the paralyzing fear (8)

coin, many technologies have brought benefits to the consumer with little or no cost to privacy. Encryption
is one that springs to mind. Many of the most valuable innovations in banking and communications could
never have been deployed without this technique.
The problem with privacy is not technology, but the institutions which make use of it. Governments are
hungry for data, and will use their powers to force companies to collect, retain and yield personal
information on their customers. In recent years, governments have managed to incorporate surveillance
into almost every aspect of our finances, communication and lifestyle. While acknowledging the
importance of privacy as a fundamental right, they argue that surveillance is needed to maintain law and
order and create economic efficiency. The right to privacy, it is always claimed, should not be allowed to
stand in the way of the wider public interest. This argument is sound in principle, but there seems little
intellectual or analytical basis for its universal and unquestioned application.
I. For each question decide which answer (A, B, C or D) fits best according to the text. 10 points
1. What view does the writer put forward in the second paragraph?
A. people should be willing to do without certain forms of technology
B. it is a mistake to criticize people for the way they use technology
C. it is unrealistic to deny people the benefits that technology can bring
D. people shouldn't be allowed to use technologies that threaten privacy
II. Starting from the text above, write an opinion essay on whether you agree or not with the idea
that the lack of privacy has become a widespread problem nowadays. (220-250 words)
