It has been decided to introduce periodic tests for all front panel potentiometers and switches
in order to timely identify and replace any such component that show signs of erratic function.
The testing of two of these front panel potentiometers were addressed earlier in a Safety Alert
Letter*, dated June 13, 2000, titled “Erratic function of the front panel potentiometers due to
oxidation”. In this letter all users were requested to extend the Function and Pre-use checks
with a potentiometer test, in order to assure system integrity and to avoid possible clinical
implications.
The subsequently implemented corrective action included:
1. complementing the SV 300 Operating Manual with an instruction for a function test of
the “PEEP” and “Insp. Time %” potentiometers, and
2. the replacement of potentiometers that did not pass the function test.

The periodic tests now introduced are to be performed in connection with every 1000 and
3000 hour maintenance and are aimed solely at maintaining a high operating reliability.

The instructions for the new periodic tests are found in the document “Addendum to the Servo
Ventilator 300/300A – Operating Manual” (see enclosure), which from now on will be
enclosed with both types SV 300 Maintenance kits: 62 04 296 E380E (Maintenance kit 1000
hours) and 61 50 929 E380E (Maintenance kit 3000 hours).

The maintenance instructions are, as you all know, included in the Operating Manual of the
Servo Ventilator 300/300A, in chapters “1000h overhaul” and “3000h overhaul with complete
cleaning”.

Function test of control panel potentiometers and switches
The control panel potentiometers and switches must be tested at every 1000 and 3000 hour maintenance interval
according to the following instructions.

Function test of control panel potentiometers

• Turn all potentiometer control knobs counter-clockwise to their end positions (the “Volume” control knob at least
one turn).
• Set the mode selector to “Stand by”.
• Initiate the Set Parameter Guide using the touchpad in a mode that will activate the potentiometer to be tested.
A yellow light at the control knob shows if it is active.

Repeat the following procedure for all potentiometers:

• Turn the control knob clockwise to its end position (the “Volume” control knob at least one turn).
• Then turn the control knob slowly counter-clockwise to its end position (the “Volume” control knob at least one
turn). While turning the control knob, check on the corresponding display or bargraph that:
1. Displayed values reflect the position of the control knob.
2. Displayed values follow the control knob setting evenly without sudden jumps.
3. Displayed values or bargraph LEDs do not flash.

Function test of control panel switches

• Run the ventilator in “Pressure Control” mode with gases and a test lung connected.
• Turn the three switches “Oxygen breaths/Start breath”, “Reset/2 min” and “Pause hold” back and forth to both
positions. Check that the corresponding switch function is activated.
• Turn the three switches “Mode selector”, “Patient range” and “Automode” step-by-step through all settings. Check
that the yellow light at the corresponding setting is turned on.

If any malfunction is detected during these functions tests, the ventilator must not be connected to a patient. The
malfunction must be remedied by Siemens-authorized service personnel.

Funktionstest der Bedienfeld-Potentiometer und -Schalter
Die Bedienfeld-Potentiometer und -Schalter müssen bei jedem 1000- und 3000-Stunden-Wartungsintervall gemäß
den folgenden Anweisungen getestet werden.
Funktionstest der Bedienfeld-Potentiometer
• Alle Potentiometer-Bedienknöpfe entgegen dem Uhrzeigersinn auf ihre Endstellung drehen (der Bedienknopf
„Volumen“ muss hierbei mindestens um eine Drehung gedreht werden).
• Den Beatmungs-Wähler auf „Bereit“ stellen.
• Die Parametereinstellung mit Hilfe des Berührungsfeldes in einem Beatmungsform einleiten, der das zu testende
Potentiometer aktivieren wird. Ein gelbes Licht am Bedienknopf zeigt an, ob das Potentiometer aktiv ist.

Das folgende Verfahren für alle Potentiometer wiederholen:

• Den Bedienknopf im Uhrzeigersinn auf seine Endstellung drehen (der Bedienknopf „Volumen“ muss hierbei
mindestens um eine Drehung gedreht werden).
• Anschließend den Bedienknopf langsam entgegen dem Uhrzeigersinn auf seine Endstellung drehen (der
Bedienknopf „Volumen“ muss mindestens um eine Drehung gedreht werden). Dabei gleichzeitig auf der
entsprechenden Anzeige bzw. dem entsprechenden Balkendiagramm sicherstellen, dass:
1. die angezeigten Werte der Stellung des Bedienknopfes entsprechen.
2. die angezeigten Werte der Bedienknopfeinstellung gleichmäßig ohne plötzliche Sprünge folgen.
3. die angezeigten Werte bzw. die Balkendiagramm-LEDs nicht blinken.
Funktionstest der Bedienfeld-Schalter
• Den Ventilator im Beatmungsform „Druckkontrolle“ mit Gasen und einer angeschlossenen Testlunge betreiben.
• Die drei Schalter „O2-Beatmung/Start Inspiration“, „Rücksetzung/2 min“ und „Pausenhalt“ auf beide Stellungen hin
und her drehen. Überprüfen, ob die entsprechende Schalterfunktion aktiviert wird.
• Die drei Schalter Modusselektor, Patientenbereich und „Automode“ schrittweise durch alle Einstellungen drehen.
Überprüfen, ob das gelbe Licht in der entsprechenden Einstellung eingeschaltet wird.

Wenn es im Laufe dieser Funktionstests zu einer Störung kommt, darf der Ventilator nicht an einen Patienten
angeschlossen werden. Das Problem muss durch von Siemens autorisiertes Wartungspersonal behoben werden.

Tester les potentiomètres et les interrupteurs du panneau de commandes pendant les maintenances programmées
des 1 000 et 3 000 heures selon les instructions suivantes.
Test des fonctions des potentiomètres du panneau de commandes
• Tourner tous les boutons de commande du potentiomètre dans le sens inverse des aiguilles d’une montre
jusqu’au blocage (et tourner le bouton de réglage du “Volume” d’un tour minimum).
• Régler le sélecteur de mode sur “Attente”.
• Initialiser l’option Définir le guide de paramètre à l’aide du clavier dans un mode permettant l’activation du
potentiomètre à tester. Le voyant jaune du bouton de commande indique qu’il est activé.

Répéter la procédure suivante pour tous les potentiomètres.

• Tourner le bouton de commande dans le sens des aiguilles d’une montre jusqu’au blocage (et tourner le bouton
de réglage du “Volume” d’un tour minimum).
• Tourner ensuite lentement le bouton de commande dans le sens inverse des aiguilles d’une montre jusqu’au
blocage (et tourner le bouton de réglage du “Volume” d’un tour minimum). Tout en tournant le bouton de
commande, vérifier que l’écran ou le graphe à barres correspondant affiche :
1. valeurs reflétant la position du bouton de commande.
2. valeurs suivant les mouvements du bouton de commande uniformément sans sauts soudains.
3. valeurs ou diodes de graphe à barres ne clignotent pas.

Test des fonctions des interrupteurs du panneau de commandes

• Mettre le ventilateur en marche en mode “Pression Contrôlée” avec les gaz et un poumon test connectés.
• Tourner les trois interrupteurs à bascule “Resp. O2/Début resp”, “Reset/2 mi” et “Pause maintenue” sur l’une et
l’autre des positions. Vérifier que la fonction des interrupteurs correspondants est activée.
• Tourner les trois interrupteurs à bascule sur Sélecteur de mode, Plage patient et “Automode” graduellement sur
toutes les positions. Vérifier que le voyant jaune de la position correspondante s’allume.

Ne pas connecter le ventilateur au patient en cas de détection de mauvais fonctionnement pendant les tests. La
rectification du problème doit être confiée à un technicien Siemens agréé.

Los potenciómetros y conmutadores del panel de mando deben controlarse en cada intervalo de mantenimiento a
las 1000 y 3000 horas, de acuerdo con las instrucciones que siguen.

Prueba de funcionamiento de los potenciómetros del panel de mando

• Girar todos los botones de mando con potenciómetro hasta el tope en el sentido opuesto a las agujas del reloj (el
botón de “Volumen” como mínimo una vuelta).
• Ajustar el selector de régimen a “En espera”.
• Iniciar la Guía para el ajuste de los parámetros usando el sensor en un régimen que active el potenciómetro a
controlar. Una lámpara amarilla en el botón muestra si está activo.

Repetir el procedimiento que sigue en todos los potenciómetros:

• Girar el botón de mando hasta el tope en el sentido de las agujas del reloj (el botón “Volumen” como mínimo una
vuelta).
• Luego girar el botón lentamente hasta el tope en el sentido opuesto a las agujas del reloj (el botón “Volumen”
como mínimo una vuelta). Al girar el botón, controlar en la ventanilla o columna indicadora correspondiente
que:
1. Los valores en la ventanilla reflejen la posición del botón de mando.
2. Los valores presentados sigan uniformemente el ajuste del botón, sin saltos repentinos.
3. Los valores presentados o diodos de la columna indicadora no se enciendan intermitentemente.

Prueba de funcionamiento de los conmutadores del panel de mando

• Hacer funcionar el ventilador en el régimen “Control presión” con los gases y un pulmón de ensayo conectados.
• Girar los tres botones “Resp. O2 puro/Resp. adicional”, “Reposición/2 min” y “Pausa prolongada” conmutándolos a
una y otra posición. Comprobar que se active la posición seleccionada correspondiente.
• Girar los botones de selección de régimen, categoría de paciente y “Automode” paso a paso por cada función.
Comprobar que se encienda la lámpara amarilla de la selección correspondiente.

Si durante esta prueba de funcionamiento se detectara alguna anomalía, el ventilador no deberá conectarse a
ningún paciente. La anomalía deberá corregirla personal de servicio autorizado por Siemens.
