Elements and Principles of Art as Seen in the Philippine Festivals

Background Information for Learners

In the previous activities you have identified the history of the festival and theatrical
forms in the Philippines .This time you will unlock another art challenge by understanding the
elements and principles of arts as seen in the Philippine Festivals.
The Filipinos are art loving people. Our previous discussions revealed the great
interests of our people in making their lives artistic in varied ways-though their ornaments,
farming implements, home and office decors, fishing implements, fighting ornaments, and
more, these are the evidences of the art of our people: representations of the arts to enjoy.
Philippine festivals are famous for their colorful and artistic costumes, masks, and
props.

ART AWARENESS
What are the five basic art elements?
1. Lines- A line is an identifiable path created by a point moving in space. It is one-
dimensional and can vary in width, direction, and length. Lines often define the edges
of a form. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, straight or curved, thick or
thin.
2. Shapes- is a two dimensional area confined by a actual line or implied line (an edge for
example). In drawing shapes are created when the ends of lines are joined to enclose
areas.
3. Colors- reflected, organized on a color wheel with 3 primary colors, 3 secondary colors,
and 6 intermediate colors.
4. Texture- refers to the surface quality in a work of art. We associate textures with the
way that things look or feel. Some things feel just as they appear; this is called real or
actual texture. Some things look like they are rough but are actually smooth . The
surface quality of an object that we sense through touch, hard, soft, rough, smooth,
hairy, leathery, sharp, etc.
5. Space- space in a work of art refers to a feeling of depth or three dimensions. It can
also refer to the artist’s use of the area within the picture.
Principles of Art:
6. Balance- the three different kinds of balance are symmetrical (formal), asymmetrical
(informal), and radial.
7. Emphasis- is the center of interest in a work of art, the most important element, where
the viewer focuses, the focal point.
8. Harmony- is the visually satisfying effect of combining similar, related elements. For
instance: adjacent colors on the color wheel, similar shapes etc. It creates cohesiveness
by stressing the similarities of separate but related parts. Specifically, harmony uses the
elements of art (color, line, shape, form, value, space, texture) as a vehicle to create a
sense of togetherness amongst otherwise separate parts.

Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 15

9. Pattern- is a design in which lines, shapes, forms or colors are repeated. The part that
is repeated is called a motif. Patterns can be regular or irregular.
10. Space- is one of the basic elements of art. It refers to the distance between or the area
around and within shapes, forms, colors and lines. Space can be positive or negative. It
includes the background, foreground and middle ground. Gain important clues about
the meaning of an art piece.

Arts and Crafts of Mimaropa and Visayas Group of Islands

Background Information for Learners

Sinulog in Cebu
The grandest festival of the country is easily Cebu’s Sinulog Festival, which honors the Señor
Santo Niño or the Child Jesus, an image of which was a gift from the Portuguese explorer
Ferdinand Magellan to Raja Humabon and Hara Amihan when he came to conquer the
Philippines in 1521. ‘Sinulog’ is derived from the Cebuano adverb ‘sulog’, which roughly
translates to “like water current movement”—the inspiration for the festival’s famous two
steps forward, one step backward dance.

Ati-Atihan in Kalibo, Aklan

Known as The Mother of All Philippine Festivals, the Ati-Atihan serves as the inspiration
behind Cebu’s Sinulog and IloIlo’s Dinagyang, among many other festivals in the country.
While it is also in honor of the Santo Niño, its origins are more pagan in nature, dating some
800 years ago. The festival’s name means ‘to be like the Atis’—the Aetas, the dark-skinned
indigenous people who are said to be the first settlers in the Philippines. Initially a celebration
of unity between the Aetas and Malay chieftains who fled Borneo to settle in the Panay Islands,
the Spanish conquerors later on integrated Catholicism into the festival.

Dinagyang in Iloilo
The Dinagyang Festival, the name of which comes from the Ilonggo
term ‘dagyang’ meaning ‘merrymaking’, is heavily influenced by Sinulog and Ati-Atihan,
and borrows elements from the two festivals. A little more modern than its inspirations,
Dinagyang began in the 1960s, when a replica of the Señor Santo Niño was first brought in
from Cebu, much to the devotion of the Ilonggos. The anniversary of this day became a yearly
celebration, which eventually incorporated dramatized interpretations of the Aetas’ welcome
of the chieftains from Borneo.
simple celebration of thanksgiving back in the 15th century, when farmers offered their
harvests at the foot Mount Banahaw—a practice that carried on after the first Church was
established and saw natives offering their fresh farm produce to St. Isidore. Eventually, with
the Church unable to accommodate all the harvest, they were instead displayed at the homes of
the farmers.

Masskara in Bacolod
Known as the City of Smiles, Bacolod demonstrates its resilience with its annual MassKara
Festival. The festival started out in a time of crisis in 1980 when the people of Bacolod, who
relied on their sugar cane plantations, suffered from a devastating drop in production and all-
time low prices with the introduction of high fructose corn syrup as a sugar substitute. That

same year, more than 700 Negrenses lost their lives with the sinking of the MV Don Juan.
Following those tragic events, the local government decided to establish the MassKara Festival
as a way to boost morale and liven up the people’s spirits.

Festivals of the Philippines

Background Information for Learners

Philippine festivals are famous for their colorful and artistic costumes, masks, and
props. The art elements like color, lines, and textures are considered, and their principles like
repetition and balance are used to come up with good design. Festival dances are cultural
dances performed to the strong beats of percussion instruments by a community of people
sharing the same culture usually done in honor of a Patron Saint or in thanksgiving of a
bountiful harvest. Festival dances may be religious or secular in nature. But the best thing about
festivals is that they draw the people’s culture by portraying the people’s ways of life through
movements, costumes, implements inherent to their place of origin and a reflection of the unity
of the Filipino community that despite the economic, social, environmental, cultural, and
political challenges we face every day, there can be no other race more resilient than ours.

Philippine Festivals and Theatrical Forms

Background Information for the Learners

They say that Filipinos celebrate every event with a festival, and in different parts
of the country and provinces, there is a different festival being celebrated more than
once every month like the following: Ati-atihan (Aklan), Pahiyas (Quezon),
Panagbenga (Baguio), Sinulog (Cebu), Dinagyang (Iloilo), Maskara (Bacolod),
Kadayawan (Davao), and Lamilamihan (Basilan).

Traditional drama in the Philippines was based on local rites and rituals which the
Spanish friars used and adapted to Christianized Filipinos. Thus, we have the senakulo,
the Santa Cruzan, the Duplo,u Subli, Moro-moro, Moriones, and Pabasa ng Pasyon. The
dramatization with songs, dances and costumes made Christian doctrines more
appealing to the local folks all over the country where the Spanish friars settled Modern
drama like the zarzuelas and now the telenovelas are not religious in character. Their
plots were usually human romances, conflicts, and resolutions.

You will apply your knowledge and understanding in the use of various art elements
and principles of design in associating meaning with the visuals from Philippine drama
and festivals and also the message and meaning created by art elements and designs
utilized by the community in their festivals as a way of life.

Background Information for Learners

Papier-măchě or paper mache is a popular crafting technique that uses paper and paste
to create a variety of objects. The method is named after the French term for “chewed paper”
which makes sense given the steps needed for any paper mache project.

Many of the Festivals here in the Philippines make their props and costumes with the
use of recycled materials, like Masskara Festival in Bacolod City, mask is one of their famous
props and costumes, and Panagbenga Festival in Baguio City, flowers are their famous props.
One of their techniques in making their costumes and props is the papier-măchě.
