ELECTRICAL SYSTEM / LIGHTING: 24 VDC system with 175 amp alternator.
The Mark VI Tamper is provided with lighting to meet local standards as required for travel and
identification of an on track machine. The machine is equipped with work lights to illuminate the
area around the machine to allow night work. All lighting is based on 24 VDC and is capable of
being used without the engine activated.
JUPITER CONTROL SYSTEM: The control system utilizes Harsco Rail’s Jupiter II architecture, a
distributed I/O system. Ergonomic operator control is provided through arm panel keypads,
joysticks, an IBM compatible keyboard and printer, and a 17-inch (391mm) super-VGA color
monitor as a graphical interface.
The Jupiter II system consists of a primary computer (the Jupiter II Application Master or JAM)
located in the cab that performs the role of system controller to a group of networked I/O
modules. The JAM provides the processing power for controlling the user interface, the machine
control logic and the lining system, including measuring, recording, analyzing and lining curves.

An industrial network cable connects the JAM to a series of I/O modules that are remotely located
around the machine, each local to their interacting devices.
Jupiter II’s control system complexity is radically simplified by eliminating much of the wiring and
junction boxes required by a non-distributed system. The fully potted modules are designed for
exposure to harsh environmental conditions including a high degree of vibration tolerance. Pre-
molded cables and cord sets eliminate field wiring and reduce the likelihood of open/short
circuits.
Jupiter II electrical system diagnostics build and improve on previous generation “smart I/O”
capabilities. The use of “pop-out” graphical diagnostic screens in conjunction with the diagnostic
features of each Jupiter II module simplifies the job of electrical troubleshooting and drastically
reduces downtime. Operators/technicians can rapidly locate and solve most control system problems
without the use of a schematic or multi-meter. Features include:
• All output channels detect, report and count short circuits
• All output channels detect, report and count open circuits
• Output channels monitor and display load current in Amps
• All digital I/O channels include status LED indicators
• Module status is monitored and reported in the case of failure
• Network communication is monitored and reported in case of failure
Jupiter II is the control system used on all Harsco Rail equipment, from the smallest to the largest.
Having only two module types for an entire range of products has tremendous advantages in terms
of parts inventory and service training for both Harsco Rail and our customers. The “plug and play”
capability of Jupiter II allows modules to be exchanged between completely different machines with
impunity. Application software for Jupiter II systems can be e-mailed to service personnel for quick
field installation or upgrade.
RAIL CLAMP - LIFTING AND LINING SYSTEM: The Combo Clamp multi-purpose lifting and lining
assembly is capable of clamping and jacking the track in both production and switch tamping
modes. Unit lifts from the ball of the rail during production work and can lift as required from
either the ball or base of the rail with the same clamp in switch tamping. Clamping pressure is
adjustable from the cab.

TAMPING SYSTEM:
The Youngman Vibrators are arranged in pairs which provides four independent workheads. The
workhead consists of the two vibrators, a carrier, guide rods, workhead frame, and hydraulic
squeeze cylinders and hydraulic lift cylinders. The vibrators are mounted to a carrier with pivot
pins that are supported by tapered roller bearings for squeezing in and out. This arrangement
provides a zero clearance pivot connection for low noise and high durability operation.

A hydraulic cylinder vertically actuates the carriers, with the vibrators, on a pair of 76.2mm (3”)
diameter automatically lubricated guide rods. A carefully designed workhead frame supports the
guide rods forming the complete workhead package. This workhead provides optimum visibility
of the track being tamped as well as the clamp frame. Also, this workhead allows ample access
space for service and maintenance.
Any or all of the four workheads may be selected to participate in the automatic tamping cycle
by pressing the corresponding workhead activation button and pulling the cycle joystick or
pressing the cycle footswitch. Also, they may be manually moved or cycled using the
corresponding workhead joystick.
The workheads are connected to the machine frame on a pair of I beams. Hydraulic cylinders
with 1372mm (54”) stroke traverse each workhead. Each workhead can be independently
traversed across the machine. The machine can be equipped with folding beam extensions that
allow the outer workheads to reach up to 2403mm (94 5/8”) from the center line of track to the
outer edge of the outer tamping paddle. The inner workheads innermost position is to centerline
of the machine.
Tamping of unevenly spaced or skewed ties is simplified by manually adjustable tamping tool
positions. Tamping tools for individual workheads can be positioned closer together (squeezed
in) prior to the work cycle, allowing insertion in areas of tight tie spacing.
Workhead depth can be varied from within the cab using operator defined settings on the pop-
out workhead panel. This panel includes current workhead position according to the workhead
transducer along with the upper (standby) position and lower (squeeze) position for each
workhead. This increases productivity by automatically returning the workheads to a lower
standby position when indexing during production runs (production mode), and to a higher
Page 4 of 10
position when moving workheads through a switch (switch mode).
Tamps per cycle can be individually set for each workhead. This can be an advantage when
changing cross level in a curve by a large amount where the lift is minimal on one side and double
tamping that side may be undesirable.
The workhead squeeze pressure can be graphically monitored during tamping, allowing the
operator to discern tamping quality and the potential need for additional tamps per cycle due to
varied ballast conditions. Squeeze pressure setting is adjusted with the computer from the
operator’s position.
Insertion counters, distance tamped and time worked in various modes are standard for the
software.
Calibration data and insertion counts are automatically saved in permanent electronic storage.
The entire tamping cycle of the MKVI is automatically controlled by the operator and can be
preset to suit various ballast conditions.
The Tamp Cycle consists of three phases:
1) Downfeed
2) Squeeze-In
3) Squeeze Out & Upfeed
Downfeed
When cycle is engaged the selected workheads move downward until they reach their lower limit
switches or lower (squeeze) position on their transducers (String Pots).
The lower limit switches, or the transducers low position, must be set so the tamping tools will
stop at the proper depth in the ballast. The proper depth is when the top of the tamping tools
stop approximately ¼" – ½" below the bottom of the tie.
If the tamping tools are NOT set deep enough, the tools will squeeze the sides of the tie during
the squeeze-in movement instead of underneath the tie. Consequently improper ballast
compaction and poor quality tamping will result.

If the tamping tools are set too deep, the ballast will flow over the tops of the tamping tools again
resulting in poor quality tamping.
The main consequence of improperly set limit switches, or transducers, is poor ballast
compaction that ultimately affects both surface and crosslevel.

Squeeze-In
Once the lower limit switches, or lower (squeeze) position on the transducers, have been
activated the squeeze in function is started automatically. There are two important factors in
the squeeze-in portion of the tamp cycle. Squeeze speed and squeeze pressure.
Adjusting Workhead Squeeze-In Speed
The rate of squeeze-in (squeeze speed) is controlled by adjustable hydraulic flow controls. The
flow control valves regulate the speed of squeeze-in to insure tamping is not finished prior to the
finish of lifting and/or lining.
The minimum squeeze time determines the minimum time squeeze pressure will be sustained
even when the desired squeeze pressure is reached. The maximum squeeze time is the time the
squeeze pressure will be released regardless of whether or not desired squeeze pressure is
reached.
Squeeze Pressure
Proper adjustment of the squeeze pressure adjustment is very important in order to achieve
quality tamping. The proper setting for the squeeze pressure switch on the MKVI varies
depending on ballast conditions. This setting can be adjusted from the operator’s seat through
the computer system.
Upfeed and Squeeze-Out
Once the squeeze pressure switch has been activated, squeeze-out and upfeed will begin. The
upper limit switches, or the transducer upper (standby) position, control the height of the
workheads and are adjustable for varying conditions. Under normal conditions the height of the
workheads should be set so that the tamping tools clear the ties by approximately 2-3 inches.
TIE FINDER
The Tie Finder incorporates Harsco Rail’s proprietary tie sensor technology and control software
which enables intelligent automatic indexing, thereby increasing productivity while reducing operator
fatigue. The marriage of probes designed to detect the location of either wood or concrete ties with
the machine’s automatic cycle allows for fully automatic work. The operator is free to focus on other
issues such as making surfacing adjustments and safely observing the surrounding track and worksite,
with only occasional input to a safety switch required to continue working. The work rate is user
adjustable.
Additionally, higher overall daily productivity is achieved by removing the impact of distractions that
might otherwise require an operator to temporarily suspend tamping. With Tie Finder, machines
work straight through challenging conditions such as inclement weather or flooded ballast conditions
that can reduce crosstie visibility.
The Tie Finder system consists of the Tie Finder antennas, control boxes and machine control
software. This system provides fully automated tamping which relieves operator fatigue and permits
the operator to more directly focus on monitoring the machine performance.
The tie finder system is typically not used in switches and crossings.

LEVELING REFERENCE SYSTEM: The System V leveling system utilizes an infrared light source, 2
receivers, and a shadowboard to form a three point reference system. An Inclinometer on the
receiver buggy senses track crosslevel. Automatic ramp-in and ramp-out capabilities and
automatic correction of lift and crosslevel are featured.
The surfacing system currently used on the MKVI tamper is sometimes referred to as the "Delta"
system. This system consists of 3 points that are directly referenced to the rails.
The 3 point surfacing system consists of:
1. Projector
2. Shadowboard
3. Receiver Group
A. Double Barrel Electronic Receivers
B. Inclinometer
During normal operation the projector emits an infra red light which spreads out, shines over the
shadowboard and into both receivers. Refer to figure 1.

Figure 1
Surface Fitting
Surface Fitting is a feature that provides automatic control of surface during tamping to give the
best possible result with the smallest possible lift. This is achieved by using the surface reference
system of the machine to record the track prior to surfacing. Surface profiles of left and right
rails are computed and used to establish a surfacing plan in combination with default selections.
Some of the main benefits of Surface Fitting are:

 Surface Fitting takes the guesswork out of applying sufficient lift to correct the largest
errors while not lifting the track any higher than is absolutely necessary.

 The operator and foreman can give more attention to other aspects of operating the
machine, as the control of the lift is fully automatic.
 By knowing the surface profile of the track, the vertical movement of the projector
through track errors is compensated for, providing a smoother, more accurate result.
 In situations where surfacing the track would otherwise require more than one pass,
Surface Fitting can often reduce the number of passes necessary.
 The high error correction ratio of the machine makes control of lift without Surface Fitting
more difficult. Where long wavelength errors exist, the operator frequently has to
“chase” the lift using manual variations to avoid running out of lift over high points or
lifting the track too high through low points. These variations are more rapid than they
need to be and represent another way that Surface Fitting gives a better result.
 Surface Fitting automates the difficult task of surfacing into, and out of, fixed points while
doing an excellent job of blending into the preexisting profile through fixed points.
 The effect of vertical curvature on surface is automatically recognized by Surface Fitting
and removed from the display of track errors in the form of surface profiles. Vertical
curvature is automatically reapplied as surfacing takes place, further simplifying the task
for the operator.
 The operator can easily control the surface fit by changing the minimum clearance over
high points, the maximum lift through low points and the permissible rate of change of
lift. Independently, the allowable rate of change in lift when approaching and departing
fixed points is automatically applied by the surface fit.
 The Low Point Compensation feature provides a simple mechanism for applying
additional lift at low points that compensates for higher initial settlement. This feature
results in surface that is more fully corrected and more durable.
 When lifting to stakes or monuments, surface fitting automatically uses surface survey
data to improve the accuracy of the computed surface profile which results in even
greater precision.
 There are several benefits that arise directly from Surface Fitting applying only the
minimum necessary lift to achieve the desired results:
✓ Less ballast is necessary for any given amount of work (particularly if one or more
passes are eliminated).
✓ Smaller lifts disturb the track less, resulting in better, more durable track quality
than larger lifts.
✓ On track with overhead wiring and/or structures, minimizing the lift is vital. Track
can be surfaced more times before major work to restore clearances will be
needed. At overhead bridges, the operator can “rubber band” changes to further
reduce lift while continuing to correct cross-level. Alternatively, the track under
the overhead bridge can be treated as a fixed point so as to be not lifted at all
while smoothly ramping the lift into and out of the profile under the bridge.
✓ More work can be successfully completed without distributing new ballast.
✓ By recording and fitting areas in advance, the amount and location of new ballast
genuinely needed will be known before work commences.
✓ Lower lifts make it easier to maintain high production and are easier on the
machines (particularly the ballast regulator).

 On curves, no additional time is needed to record and fit surface profiles. On tangent
track, the many benefits will usually outweigh the small amount of additional time needed
to record the track prior to work.
 As the applied lift ahead of the machine is displayed in a clear graphical fashion, the
operator remains fully informed. For example, at the end of a work period, the operator
can easily choose a suitable location to ramp out the lift so as to simplify resuming work
at the same site or to best blend in with the existing track profile.
 In curves where super elevation is being decreased or increased, the additional lift needed
to achieve the desired super elevation will be automatically applied.
In summary, it is difficult to imagine a single feature for a tamping machine that would have more

LINING REFERENCE SYSTEM: The System V three point Lining system provides automatic “best
fit” of curves with the ability to easily adjust the fits and print out curve data and graphs. The
system is based on pre-plotting of the curve either by the tamper or any other source and
utilization of this alignment data to program the correction of the track prior to performing
corrections. The current position of the track, the corrected alignment, the anticipated "throws"
of the track, the time, data and track position can be plotted on board the machine or viewed on
the operator's display screen. The machine control processor will perform an analysis of this
curve data and generate a best correction of the curve for consideration. If not acceptable, this
can be manually modified by “rubber-banding” to the desired position. The graphic output of
the system highlights, using colors, the various on-screen information.
A solid-state removable USB flash drive is available for the transfer of track recordings and
production reporting data. Curves that have been recorded may be transferred to this device
and subsequently read by an IBM-compatible PC equipped with the System-V office version (USB
port required). The alignment of curves may be viewed in the office environment, modified or
engineered as desired, saved to removable flash drive and returned to the machine for use. Upon
insertion of the USB flash drive, curve data files transfer automatically, updating the information
both on the machine and on the removable device.
3 Point Light Based Lining System
The MKVI uses a three point lining system which utilizes the same principles of operation as the
surfacing Delta system. The liner uses a modulated infra-red light in conjunction with a liner
shadowboard and liner receiver. For curves, this system is a two pass lining system. The track is
recorded prior to working so that shorter wavelength errors can be corrected as aggressively as
desired.
Remember that when surfacing track with the Delta Leveling System, the track has only one way
to move and that is an upward movement. In lining, all three points are laying over on their side
and will allow the lining system to move the track and lining shadowboard in two directions, left
or right.

Each lining station must have its components installed on the same side of the machine. This
means that in a curve, the lining projector, shadowboard and receiver must be placed on the low
rail of the curve. The opposite rail must have each station’s reference wheels biased, so they
cannot move away from the Line Rail.
COUPLERS
The MKVI can be equipped with various couplers specified by the customer, and they will be located
at the customer specified height.
