Reflection: Teacher as a Curricularist

The table above shows the data we have collected from elementary school teachers. Upon
tallying the survey, I could therefore conclude that most of them are definitely doing their job as a
curricularist. It implies that most of them values teaching and especially their students. However, I
want to focus my thought on the fact that they make their own adjustments to allign their students’
level, this is in accordance to sentence number four on the survey tool, which states: “I modify my
activity to suit my learners in my classroom”. Although I am somehow against this, this only proves
that teachers are willing to change and make certain adjustments for the sake of their students. But at
one point, I thought to myself, does this method only make it seem like the children are not capable
for that specific task, to the point of having to change it to reach their level? I feel like they are setting
them inside of a box, as if they are drawing a border, because they may think that, “oh, I don’t think
my students can do this, or handle this activity, therefore I’ll modify to make it easier for them, or to
reach their level,” it may sound appealing to some people or even think of it as a gesture of empathy
but not for me. I think this implies that the teacher is undermining the students capabilities and not
letting them exert an actual effort because of the modification. I think it would cause problems on the
coming years of a student because of the indirect effect of this type of method (modification to suit
the level of the student). It may breed laziness and incompetence too, though that is completely
dependent on the student and it is in no way completely related to this matter (because there are
different factors). However, all in all, I realized that the teaching profession is indeed something that
requires a lot of effort and hardwork. It just amplifies the fact that it is something to be taken
seriously. And to be honest, I can’t stop thinking about the ultimate relevance of a teacher’s
performance towards learner’s progress. It could either really make or break or them. It is all up to the
teacher because they are the ones who helpo mold a student. And that is truly a great responsibility.
