HEAT TRANSFER

1. Two metals have the same size but different type. The thermal conductivity of P
= 2 times the thermal conductivity of Q. What is the temperature between the two
metals, as shown in the figure below.

GIVEN:
l = Metal P=Metal Q
k Metal P = 2k
k Metal Q = k
T1 Metal P = 90 oC
T2 Metal Q = 0 oC

(Q/t)P = (Q/t)Q

kP*A*(∆T / l) = kQ *A*(∆T / l)

kP * (T2 - T1) = kQ * (T2 - T1)

2k * (T - 90 oC) = k * (0 oC - T)

2 (T - 90 oC) = (0 oC - T)

2T – 180 oC = – T

-180 oC = -T – 2T

-180 oC = -3T

T = 60 oC
2. Metal A and metal B have the same length and the same cross-sectional. If the
thermal conductivity of metal A = ¼ times the thermal conductivity of metal B.
Both metals heated at its end and the change in temperature of both metals are the
same. The ratio of the rate of the heat conduction of metal A to metal B.

GIVEN:

Metal A = Metal B

l = Metal A=Metal B

A = Metal A=Metal B

kA = ¼ k

kB = k

∆T = Metal A=Metal B

= (Q/t)A : (Q/t)B

= kA*A*(∆T / l) : kB *A*(∆T / l)

= (1 : ¼)

= 4 (1 : ¼)

= 4 : 1        < ratio of Q/t

3. Two metals, A and B, have the same size. The thermal conduction of the metal
A = 2k and the thermal conduction of the metal B = k.

As shown in the figure below, the end of both metals has the different temperature.

What is the temperature between both metals?

GIVEN:
l = Metal A=Metal B
k Metal A = 2k
k Metal B = k
T1 Metal A = 210 oC
T2 Metal B = 30 oC

(Q/t)A = (Q/t)B

kA*A*(∆T / l) = kB *A*(∆T / l)

kA * (T2 - T1) = kB * (T2 - T1)

2k * (T – 210 oC) = k * (30 oC - T)

2 (T – 210 oC) = (30 oC - T)

2T – 420 oC = 30 oC - T

2T + T = 30 oC + 420 oC

 3 T = 450 oC /3

T = 150 oC
4. Two metals have the same size. The thermal conductivity of metal II = 2 times
the thermal conductivity of metal I. If one end of metal I is heated so T1 = 100 oC
and one end of metal II is heated so T2 = 25 oC , then what is the temperature
between both metals.

GIVEN:
l = Metal I=Metal II
k Metal I = k
k Metal II = 2k
T1 Metal I = 100 oC
T2 Metal II = 25 oC

(Q/t)I = (Q/t)II

kI*A*(∆T / l) = kII *A*(∆T / l)

kI * (T2 - T1) = kII * (T2 - T1)

k * (T – 100 oC) = 2k * (25 oC - T)

(T – 100 oC) = 2 (25 oC - T)

T – 100 oC = 50 oC - 2T

2T + T = 50 oC + 100 oC

 3 T = 150 oC /3

T = 50 oC
5. Metal rods of the same size, but made of different metals are combined as shown
in the figure below. If the thermal conductivity of metal I = 4 times the metal
conductivity II, then the temperature at the junction of the two metals is …

GIVEN:
l = Metal I=Metal II
k Metal I = 4k
k Metal II = k
T1 Metal I = 50 oC
T2 Metal II = 0 oC

(Q/t)I = (Q/t)II

kI*A*(∆T / l) = kII *A*(∆T / l)

kI * (T2 - T1) = kII * (T2 - T1)

4k * (T – 50 oC) = k * (0 oC - T)

4 (T – 50 oC) = (0 oC - T)

4T – 200 oC = 0 oC - T

4T + T = 0 oC + 200 oC

 5 T = 200 oC /5

T = 40 oC
