CONTENT ANALYSIS
Objectives and Scope
This research aimed to document the impact of BTS to the junior
high students of AAC. BTS have impacts to the junior high students in
terms of Music theme, Emotional health, and financial management.
This study made use of a descriptive quantitative research design. The
respondents were chosen through purposive sampling method where
respondents were chosen to participate in the said study.
The researchers handed out the questionnaires through google forms
due to pandemic. Simple frequency and percentage, weighted mean,
and standard deviation was used for data treatment.
viii

Findings
Based on the finding of the conducted study, it showed that
most of the respondents were female. The majority of the age profiles
were 13 year olds and are grade 7 students who have been a fan for
2-3 years. Majority of them did not do any activities as a fan.
Based on the data gathered it was found that among the three
areas of concern only two areas were strongly agreed by the
respondents that BTS has impacts, specifically the music theme and
emotional health.

Conclusion
BTS have impacted students through their music theme and the
students’ emotional health. However, the remaining area, financial
management, was the least impacted. Overall, the data showed that
BTS’ has impacts to students in terms of the Music Theme, Emotional
Health, and Financial Management.

PARTICIPATIVE RESEARCH AND ITS DESIGN

Rationale of the study

The South Korean boy band, BTS, has been writing their own

success since the day they made their name in the music industry.

And since then, they have received such criticism that made such

negative perceptions to students. When comedian Alex Williamson

insulted BTS and the band’s fans, stans online sent out mass emails to

his potential bookers urging them not to employ him (Junkee, 2020).

Beware jumping on the BTS bandwagon; the group’s toxic fan

“A.R.M.Y.” might wage war on you.

According to a PopDust post from March, some fans have cyber-

bullied black BTS fans with racist taunts. But it’s sad that BTS has

spawned a juvenile fandom that’s over-obsessed with a band (Kussin,

2019). It’s because of the toxic ways of the fans that gives BTS the

bad image but the only thing that BTS wants for us is to love ourselves

and chase our dreams.

BTS is one of the most demanding acts in the U.S. compared to

other K-Pop groups. BTS fans are becoming more diverse when it

comes to age. In 2018, almost 50% of BTS fans were females between

the ages of 18 to 24. In 2019, that number is 39%, with the

2

percentage of fans aged 24-35 growing from 16% to 27% (Kpopmap,

2019).

BTS does not only create great music but they have inspired us

by overcoming personal trials that showed their dedication. BTS’s

debut song boldly demands that we face ourselves and question

ourselves about who we want to be. The lyrics ask us what our dream

is, daring us to truly live by finding our own path and flying higher

instead of simply going through life doing what is expected or what

we’re told. According to Koreaboo, a recent survey conducted by

Embrain Trend Monitor yielded results that saw a majority of older

South Koreans believing that the successful seven-member group,

BTS, was having a positive impact on youth (Omar, 2019). The past 3

years has been a real wakeup call for anyone who hasn’t listened to

Korean music or who slams it for no reason. Many messages, both

good and bad, are spread within the BTS Fandom. These messages

would certainly take effect on people listening along the steps of these

idols, they could take them to heart or simply graze over them. In

shorter words, many students are able to learn from BTS and the

people within it. Not to mention the community of people who enjoy K-

Pop learn and affect each other all the time.

3

Philippines, coming in first place, with the most official ARMYs in

the world and making up a staggering 21% of all BTS fans (Lyka,

2019). Filipinos are perhaps the most hardcore fans of this group. BTS

continues to build a loyal fan base in the Philippines. Most Filipino fans

of BTS are students in their teens to mid-20s as well as young

professionals, all of whom seem dedicated to their idols. These

students and young professionals are also active when it comes to

supporting BTS through organizing fan activities such as annual get-

togethers, concert projects and even charity work (Vergonia, 2018).

Cebuano ARMYs, just like other ARMYs across the globe, are

known for their mobilization to support the group during album, song

or video release cycles. Seeing as BTS has millions of fans all over the

world, their impact has left a positive impression on others too. Many

Cebuano ARMYs (the fandom name) interact with each other to talk

about how being a fan motivates them to do well in school and they

try to take better care of themselves. It’s nice to see how much of the

group’s influence created a positive impact in global society (Diez,

2019).

And because of this, they are known for being really

talented, genuine, humble, and hardworking. They know when to be

silly and know when to be serious. What you see is what you get. All
4

seven of them are unique and stand out on their own, but together

their unique chemistry as a group cannot be recreated. They have

learned and grown from their mistakes humbly in the past five years

and that has only made them better and stronger. Overall, it may be

said that BTS is one of the most influential boy bands in the music

industry due to their striking success, genuine music and their

dedication to their fans. BTS has worked tremendously hard to get

where they are today. At this rate, BTS is going to soar to higher

heights and change the industry forever. (Capistrano, 2019)

Hence, this study is made to have known the perception of the

AAC Junior High in BTS.

5

Theoretical Background of the study

BTS, also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a seven-member South

Korean boy band that began formation in 2010 and debuted in 2013

under Big Hit Entertainment. Since then, the group has gained support

from fans all around the globe. They're very much appreciate but there

are also some people that are complete strangers to this group's

identity that they rather hate the group than knowing their story.

This study is anchored on the theory entitled Bang Shi Hyuk's

'The BTS Universe Theory' to indicate the lives of each member

through their songs. The lore is so deep that there’s a whole BTS

universe (BU) to keep up with.

The KPOP industry has been revealed often as toxic,

manipulative, and inhumane circumstances behind the scenes that

push some performers to extremes (Sherman, 2020). “K-pop’s history

is a history of cover-ups,” says John Lie, author of K-Pop: Popular

Music, Cultural Amnesia, and Economic Innovation in South Korea.

“Exploitation is one of the worst abuses.” (Lie, 2014). It was within

this environment that a man named Bang Si-hyuk began to quietly

build a different kind of studio, and to cultivate the band that would

become BTS. In 2010, Bang began to assemble a group of teens for a

6

group he called the Bulletproof Boy Scouts. This would go on to

become Bangtan Boys, then BTS, but the ingredients of their success

were inherent in the original name. Bang intended “bulletproof” to

function as a celebration of the kids’ toughness and ability to withstand

the pressures of the world. But he also wanted the band to be able to

be sincere and genuine — not immaculate idols groomed amid studio

culture, but real boys who shared their authentic personalities and

talents with the world. Bang wanted BTS to be full of figures that

audiences could relate to. To create that band, Bang had to shake up

the established precedents for how idol groups are treated. BTS

wouldn’t have strict contracts and curfews, and they’d be allowed to

discuss the pressures of stardom. Their lyrics would be open about the

cultural pressure placed on Korean teens to excel and do well and to

repress their anxieties. In short, they would be frank, honest, and

natural (Romano, 2020). Colette Bennett is an entertainment reporter

and a huge fan of BTS (she’s seen them in concert four times since

2014), but even though she liked their music, it took a while for her to

take their message seriously. To Bennett, the band’s frank discussion

of mental health and the expectations placed on Asian teens was

revolutionary. In 2016, she wrote a profile of the band that argued

that they were changing the nature of K-pop through their

7

interpersonal approach to image-making. “After only three years in K-

pop, they’re not only succeeding wildly in the industry, but setting a

standard for the bands that will come after them. Their souls are in

their performances because they helped to create them—an

investment that makes all the difference between memorizing dance

routines like a marionette, and embracing them with passionate,

authentic joy.” (Bennett, 2016).

Another theory that is similar and supports this study is 'The

Bangtan Theory'. Since most people are completely alienated about

this group, this theory, made by the ARMYs (BTS’ fandom name),

described the phenomenon and storyline of how the group was form

and their lives before gaining popularity. The theory also explains how

each member defined their struggles and gained individual popularity.

According to previous studies stated above, the Bangtan Theory

in connection to The BTS Universe Theory proves that BTS, as a group,

works hard to show their fans how much they appreciate them through

all these theories. These theories provided enough beliefs and insights

regarding how BTS can make a great impact to their supporters with

just their songs and even individual personalities. With the help of the

said theories, the researchers could come up to a stronger foundation

and can effectively assess the issue specifically in showing people how
8

great of a group BTS can be and how they influenced the young

millennial of this age.

High School students on BTS.

Specifically, it seeks to find the answers to the following questions:

1. What is the description of the individual respondents in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Grade level

1.4 length of time being a BTS fan,

1.5 activities done as a fan?

2. What is the impact of BTS to students based on the following:

2.1 The Music theme

2.2 Emotional health

2.3 Financial Management

3. Based on the findings of the study, what BTS welfare program could

be proposed?
11

Null Hypothesis

Ho- There is no significant study about the perception of AAC

Junior High School students on BTS.

Significance of the Study

This study benefits students, Parents, Teachers, and Future

readers.

Students. This will help students recognize the positive impacts

of BTS. If the action plan are taken into account then the positive

perception of students to BTS will increase.

Parents. This study is useful to parents because it will help

them understand their children’s fascination to BTS.

Teachers. The teachers will be able to understand the

fascination of the students and would be able to use BTS as a positive

influence to other students.

Future Researchers. The data from this study will be seen as a

foundation for further researches related to BTS.

12

Research Methodology

Research Design

This study is a descriptive quantitative design. This will provide an in-depth

study to understand the complexity of the research. It was run through by the use of

questionnaires as a research instrument. The data collection was based on the

questionnaires dispersed to the respondents and this serves as the primary

instrument.

Environment

This research was conducted in Adventist Academy Cebu Inc. formerly known

as East Visayan Academy, located in Natalio B. Bacalso Ave, Talisay City, Cebu, a

senior academy which is administered by the Seventh-day Adventists.

An academy with a population of 900+ enrolled students, this pleasant

campus is bristling with the peaceful community and Christ-like spirit. This research

will be conducted in AAC. AAC has a music room and students are enrolled to

different special music class such as voice lessons, piano, flute, violin and many

more.
13

Figure 2

Research Environment

Respondents

The respondents of the study are the students of Adventist Academy

Cebu, the Junior High School department. These students were divided

into different year levels and were handled by the researchers. This

research was a purposive sampling because the subjects was chosen

based on availability.
14

Instrument

The research was done through a survey. The questionnaires is

adapted from SurveyHero entitled “General Questions About Your

Relationship to BTS”, Anushka Zaveri entitled “BTS Survey 1.1”, and

liviasdata entitled “BTS ARMY Survey”. The survey was provided with

questionnaires that will design to know the impacts of BTS regarding

specific areas including Music Theme, Emotional Health, and Financial

Management. The questionnaires are divided into two parts. The first

part is where the profiles of the respondents and moving on to our

second part are students; perception on BTS in terms of the Music

Theme, Emotional Health, and Financial Management.

Data Gathering

The researchers distributed the questionnaire via google

forms/online to the Junior High School students of Adventist Academy

Cebu. The researchers conducted the research in purposive sampling

method to the JHS students. The questionnaire were gathered after

the respondents answered it successfully. After gathering, the

researchers have input the answers of the respondents.

15
Treatment of the Data

The researchers used the following methods and procedures in

treating data:

1. Frequency and percentage- will be used to determine the

percentage on the respondent’s data profile.

2. Weighted Mean- will be used to measure the average score of

the respondents.

3. Standard Deviation- will be used to help researchers

understand the distribution of data and to determine how it is

disperse different data are from the mean.

16

Flow of the Study

The inputs of this study are to find out the demographic

profile of the respondents including: age; gender; grade level;

years being a fan; activities done as a fan. In addition, it will

find the impacts of BTS to the Students of AAC in terms of:

Music Theme, Emotional Health, and Financial Management.

The process of the study involved a survey for the

respondents through purposive sampling method. The

researchers sought approval of the principal and respondents,

then distributed the questionnaires. After the questionnaires that

was answered it was analyzed and the data was interpreted.

The output of the research will be the proposed BTS

welfare program. This helped the students understand the

impacts of BTS and a guide to help them spread the BTS

influence.

Definition of Terms

This section of the paper contains words that may seem

unfamiliar that were commonly used in the content of this paper.

A.R.M.Y. A.R.M.Y" stands for "Adorable Representative M.C. for

Youth" and it carries quite some meaning behind it, given that "Army"

is associated with the military, body armor, and how those two things

are always together, the fandom name basically means that fans will

always be together with BTS

BangPD. The founder and co-CEO of BigHit Entertainment, BTS’ label

and Management Company. His full name is Bang Sihyuk, but fans

and the boys usually call him Hitman Bang.

Bangtan Bomb. Cute short little behind-the-scenes clips of the boys

posted to their BANGTANTV channel on YouTube. They’re kind of

mundane and simple, which is refreshing when so much about BTS

seems larger than life.

Bangtan Sonyeondan. The next time someone asks you what “BTS”

stands for, wow them with your knowledge by replying with “bangtan

sonyeondan” (방탄소년단)! Translated to English, this means

“bulletproof boy scouts.”

20

BigHit. The entertainment company that manages BTS. They manage

fewer groups than a few of the other K-pop powerhouses, but have

successfully debuted a second boy group this year.

BTS Welfare Program. A specialized program managed and

organized by a specific group to provide financial or other aid to other

individuals or groups.

This benefits not just the welfare program but also gaining more

feedback for BTS.

Debut. A group’s first appearance on TV.

Fan Theories. Ideas and speculation that audiences have about BTS.

Festa. A weeklong(ish) celebration of the anniversary of BTS’ debut

on June 13. New dance practices, unreleased photos, and a sit-down

video where the boys reflect on their time are all parts of the

~celebration~, as well as a huge concert.

Norms. An authoritative standard that is perceived both by a social

group with another social group.

Perception. A way of regarding, understanding, or interpreting what

a specific group of people think about BTS.

21

Vlive. This streaming platform used to distribute content. Lots of

groups use it; BTS uses it for live streams, Bon Voyage, Run BTS,

comeback trailers, and more.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Review of Related Literature

BTS is a seven-member boy group formed in Seoul by Big Hit

Entertainment and has been making a name for themselves since

then. As a band, they have a variety of talented and creative

individuals and this combination allows for interesting song

arrangements, musical styles and variations in vocal ranges. BTS has a

very wide range when it comes to genres and sounds in their music

and they are never afraid to experiment with genres or different

elements in their music. This is one of the main reasons as to why

they are such an important part in the “Hallyu”.

“Hallyu”, which is a commonly used term meaning “Korean

cultural wave”, was originated in mid-1999 by Beijing journalists who

were surprised at the speed of the fast-growing popularity of Korean

entertainment and culture (Aug 13, 2013). An intense facilitator of the

Hallyu in Particular — is K-pop (or Korean-Popular) music and move

(Kim, 2012). This also explains why BTS is such a massive influence in

the Korean wave, mainly KPOP music industry.

24

The messages in their music are very personal to young people

and to BTS themselves. The members are involved in the concepts,

Songwriting and producing of their music. They have discussed topics

like mental health, societal expectations, self-love and being true to

yourself. Since then, BTS have been gaining different perceptions from

fans all over the world (O’Donnell,2019). In addition, different

perceptions from students in regards to BTS have also been identified

(Alfonso, 2018).

For a very influential and successful boy band, BTS also has a

wide range of fans according to age and status. According to Sharma

(2021), BTS is known for their extremely diverse fan base that ranges

from as young as children aged 8 or below to people over 60 or 70 in

age and most importantly, their fandom is majorly female students.

Focusing on this wide age range has provided many contexts as to

what kind of perceptions from students have been developed ever

since they became fans of BTS.

The key to this research requires a battery of considerations,

including these three:

1. Emotional Health
25

The influence of BTS have been mainly soaring, not only to the

physical and visual interests of the students, but also in their

emotional health. BTS's focus on emotions and mental health

provides reassurance and a sense of support (Guillaume, 2021)

2. Music Theme

By using their huge platform to talk about mental health issues,

BTS becomes a very important figure to carry positive messages.

For Ana, bringing up mental health issues makes BTS accessible to

people of various backgrounds, ages, and nationalities. The theme

of BTS songs is about the anxiety of South Korean youths, but it

could also resonate with many people around the world (Pasinringi,

2020)

3. Financial Management

Aside from their music theme and overcoming emotional health,

BTS also teaches students a sense of responsibility especially when

it comes to financial responsibility. Their fandom, ARMY has started

a collective called one in An Army that regularly mobilizes the

fandom to help various nonprofit organizations around the world.

According to One in An Army’s website, the collective’s mission

comes from the belief that the fandom can achieve a lot when fans
26

come together. “Driven by the idea of using our collective power for

global good, we seek out non-profit organizations worldwide and

harness the power of ARMY into giving micro-donations over a one-

month period,” the website says. “Our motto, ‘I am ONE in an

ARMY,’ plays with the idea that many people giving small amounts

can create a substantial impact when we work together.”

Since 2018, ARMY has donated to causes that support Syrian

refugees, provide clean drinking water to underprivileged

communities, give scholarship money to students living in poverty,

and send food and supplies to homeless LGBTQ youths (Tram Anh

Ton Nu, 2020)

Narrowing down how massive the influence BTS and their

fandom has given people all over the world, one can clearly see

how this influence has also gained a positive perception from

students which inspires them to become better youths for the

future (Lily Low, 2019)

27

Review of Related Studies

There are several related studies that the researchers have

accessed from other sources to be an aid regarding the impacts of BTS

to students.

According to Zubana, Their music transcends regional and

language barriers, it speaks to the soul and the heart. Along with

being extremely humble and relatable, BTS writes songs based on

stories of real-life which make them very relatable to the listeners.

According to Rundle, their music, regardless of its genre, is

beneficial for students. It helps them bond with their friends. It’s a

stress-relieving hobby, and students can benefit from it.

“BTS, or the KPOP industry in general, manages to connect

people through a shared love of music and cultural diversity.” (Zhou,

2019). BTS have used their global reach to promote philanthropic

causes in recent months. In September, the group delivered a speech

encouraging young people to find their voices at the United Nations

General Assembly in New York City.

“BTS’s causes are universally acceptable: self-love, respect,

beneficence. All of this, while not provocative, also meshes nicely with

the values I’ve tried to instill in my daughter. With so much incivility,

28

self-destructiveness and abuse in the world, positive messages like

these may seem like a lifeline to many teenagers, especially those who

are dealing with anxiety, depression and social oppression.” (Marino,

2020).

The first steps in positively changing the world come from

empowering the masses, and by all means, BTS are doing just that.

Not only BTS has changed the perception of people towards

mental health, but they have also contributed in changing other

worldly views, such as the BLM movement. BTS’s music label, BigHit

Entertainment confirmed their donation of 1 million dollars to CNN

Entertainment. After learning about BTS’s donation, fans have decided

to #MatchAMillion through their own donation site for #BLM.

According to Rinoa Wong (2021) "Just like BTS, we were able to

donate 1M dollars to help fund bailouts for those arrested for

protesting police brutality,” they said in a tweet. Shortly after the

initiation of the project, the fundraiser raised over $817,000. It met its

goal of 1 million dollars a few days later. These funds were later

donated to organizations such as the NAACP Legal Defense and

Educational Fund, Black Aids Institute, Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant

Project, and The Marshall Project. Donations from the fundraiser were
29

also made to bailouts for protesters and organizations that support

Black communities. Once the 1 million dollar donation had been met,

One in an ARMY increased its donation goal to 2 million.

In addition to this article, Sunwoo Park (2018) states that BTS

broke not only the cultural barriers through K-Pop but also broke the

social stereotypes and obstacles by spreading powerful messages

through their songs. Their songs often deliver powerful messages by

including themes of female-empowerment, social injustice, and mental

health, which are unusual themes in culturally-conservative South

Korea.

And lastly, BTS changed the perception of the people and gave a

voice to everyone who needs to be heard. According to Forbes, the

group contributes $4.65 billion to South Korea’s gross domestic

product. Moreover, BTS contributes to poverty relief and reduction

efforts, both in South Korea and internationally. BTS also inspired a lot

of young people to stand up and be great advocates and leaders of the

future (Borgen Magazine, 2020)

prefer the choice of music BTS has recently than they first started,

with a mean of 2.72 and a standard deviation of 0.88.

35

All in all, the factor average of mean is 3.44 and a standard deviation

of 0.67, this means that students strongly agree with their perception

of BTS’ music theme.

The importance of musical theme is very important to the perception

of its audience. Musical themes can make students feel as though

they’re in the past, or far in the future. Music can convey feelings,

even the deepest and most difficult to explain emotions can be

understood by an audience in less than a minute with the proper

musical theme. While music can do all of the above, it can also make

the students understand a character quickly and be reminded of them

when they aren’t visible on camera (Winter, 2021).

It was discovered that music can release dopamine in two main

places in the brain, the dorsal and ventral striatum. When you are

having a pleasurable experience, such as listening to your favorite

song, these areas of the brain light up. The beat of the song you're

listening to can even influence your heart rate, and when people sing

together, their breathing often becomes synchronized, producing

positive emotions. These things happen because musical patterns

affect our auditory cortex, which is part of the neural reward system

and other areas involved in memory and emotion (Mitchell, 2019).

According to researchers, listening to sounds such as music and noise

38

has a significant effect on our moods and emotions because of brain

dopamine regulation — a neurotransmitter strongly involved in

emotional behavior and mood regulation. The study revealed that a

functional variation in dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) gene modulates

the impact of music as opposed to noise on mood states and emotion-

related prefrontal and striatal brain activity. “Our results suggest that

even a non-pharmacological intervention such as music might regulate

mood and emotional responses at both the behavioral and neuronal

level,” said Elvira Brattico, Professor at Aarhus University in Denmark.

For the study, 38 healthy participants were recruited, with 26 of them

having a specific “GG variant” of DRD2 and 12 a “GT variant”. They

underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during

performance of an implicit emotion-processing task while listening to

music or noise. The results showed that in participants with DRD2GG

receptors the mood improved after music exposure, whereas in GT

participants’ mood deteriorated after noise exposure (Ranganathan,

2016).

The notion of self-confidence relates to self-assurance in one’s

personal judgment, abilities, strength, and more. Self-belief has been

directly connected to self-esteem and music has a direct effect on our

self-esteem (Williams, 2018).

39

Music tends to hit on us a deep level. Whether it is sad music

that helps us feel relatable when we are going through hard times or

joyful music that adds an extra bounce to your step, music is

incredibly powerful.

The table above shows the students’ perception on BTS in terms

of their Financial Management. Statements 2, 4, 7, 9 shows that

students spends their money on BTS, their merchandise, and concert;

with the means of: 2.82, 3.24, 2.7, 2.08 and a standard deviation of

0.95, 1.04, 1.04, 0.80. BTS fans, known as ARMY, came out on top of

the study’s results. After collecting merchandise, buying 15 studio

albums and EPs, and attending five concerts, they would have spent

around $1,422. Last year, BTS alone reportedly accounted for nearly

$5 billion of South Korea’s GDP, putting them in the same league as

top-grossing companies Samsung, Hyundai, and Kia (Lantican, 2020).

Statements 1, 8, 10 shows that the students have been inspired

and was motivated by BTS; with the means of 2.96, 3.18, 3.44 and

standard deviation of 0.72, 0.76, 0.80. Teens and adults can resonate

with their songs at different points of their lives – from heartbreak to

celebrations to teaching themselves how to love themselves. There is

a song for every emotion, which is why they can easily blend into their

listeners’ lives (Valdivieso, 2020).

Lastly, statements 3, 5, 6 shows how the students have

observed the growing success of BTS; with the means of 3.3, 3.7, 3.4

And standard deviation of 0.72, 0.53, 0.56. BTS have gone beyond K-

pop to becoming a global force, thanks to their digital rule over tens of
42

millions of fans worldwide. Their songs’ English subtitles apparently

were no barrier at all (San Juan, 2020).

South Korea’s economy has greatly benefited from K-pop,

especially from BTS, in recent years, thanks to the industry’s power to

boost the export of goods, tourism, and even demand to learn the

Korean language.

Overall 3.33 0.31 Strongly Agree

The table shows the overall results specifically the grand mean

and its corresponding interpretation regarding each area of concern.

In the first row, it is seen that the grand mean of the area music

them has a grand mean of 3.44 which interprets that the respondents

have strongly agreed on the impacts of BTS. BTS doesn’t sing about

love, friendship, and partying like most K-pop groups, but in their

music you’ll hear socially relevant topics. In this way they can be open

about topics that play a role in their own lives and in South Korean

society. They deal with themes such as mental health, LGBTQ rights,
44

and women’s emancipation. They engrain these messages in lyrics that

contain a great deal of empathy, honesty and independence (Winten,

2018).

The second row on the table shows the grand mean of the area

emotional health. With the mean of 3.57 which interprets that the

respondents have strongly agreed that BTS has impacts on their

emotional health. By using their huge platform to talk about mental

health issues, BTS becomes a very important figure to carry positive

messages. For Ana, bringing up mental health issues makes BTS

accessible to people of various backgrounds, ages, and nationalities.

The theme of BTS songs is about the anxiety of South Korean youths,

but it could also resonate with many people around the world

(Pasinringi, 2020). Tamara Cavenett, psychologist and president of the

Australian Psychological Society, says celebrities — and male role

models in particular — being open about their mental health struggles

and their treatment can play an important role in reducing stigma and

encouraging people to talk about their own issues, reducing the

barriers for seeking help (Guillaume, 2021).

On the third row is the area financial management. Grand mean

of 2.58 which interprets that the respondents have agreed that BTS
45

has impacts on their financial management. A study by iPrice Group,

an e-commerce aggregator, showed that a BTS Army “superfan” in

Southeast Asia spends $1,422 (or P68, 536.73 based on current

exchange rates) on average. A superfan refers to someone who has

collected at least 15 studio albums/mini albums or EPs, attended five

concerts and bought BTS merchandise. Most of the Filipino K-Pop fans

who bought merchandise from their idols are from Quezon City,

Makati, Cebu City and Manila. By age range, the top groups for Filipino

online shoppers in their platforms are 25 to 34 years old and 18 to 24

years old. There has been an increase of shoppers in the 18 to 24 age

range during the first nine months of 2020 compared to the same

period in 2019 (Bartolome, 2020).

Overall, the grand mean is 3.33 which interprets that

respondents strongly agree that BTS has impacted them. Going

beyond music, BTS’s cultural impact reached a political level in 2018.

In October 2018, they participated in a France and South Korea

friendship concert in Paris, as a cultural exchange for both countries.

South Korean President Moon Jae-In was present with many French

and Korean officials. Their influence and popularity worldwide has

made them an unofficial ambassador to South Korea, and quite a

remarkable weapon in terms of soft power. Moreover, having a legion

46

of fans in a wide demographic can also confer financial power. Fans

will invest in anything related to them, be it music they could have for

free, but decide to bring up charts worldwide anyway, or any brand

that may have signed a contract with them. BTS themselves have a

net worth of US$60 million, but they are estimated to bring over

US$3,6 billion a year to South Korea’s economy. Along with BTS’s will

to help and empower youth, and reach as many people as possible,

their message conveys two things: inclusivity and relatability

(Petrocchi, 2019). “Maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but

yesterday’s me is still me. Today, I am who I am with all of my faults

and my mistakes. . . I have come here to love myself for who I am, for

who I was, and for who I hope to become.” This communicates just

how much they value their original goal for making the group, which is

to be bulletproof shields for young adults (hence the English

translation of their name: Bulletproof Boy Scouts.) Their impact has

been significantly positive because of it (Alfonso, 2018).

47

responsibility in guiding them because BTS have a big influence to

their lifestyle.

4. Further research can provide a more specific information

regarding fan communities and investigate the underlying social

structure and practices of the ARMY fandom.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE STUDIES

The following are recommendations for future researchers who wants

to conduct researches related to this topic:

1. Korean Wave Influence to Students

2. Understanding Filipino Korean Pop Music Fans

3. Engagement of Students in KPop Music and Their Learning

Management

4. The Influence of KPOP Culture on Students’ Lifestyle

OUTPUT OF THE STUDY

Proposed

BTS Welfare Program

(BWP)

By:

Abrasado, Kate

Chiong, Hannah

Honeylynn Montejo
52

Rationale

The South Korean boy band BTS has really taken the world by

storm and is having huge international success right now. However,

the BTS fandom, and K-pop stans in general, have a complicated

reputation on the Internet. On one hand, they are a horde of rabid

teens that trend and direct a tsunami of hate to anyone who dares to

say anything remotely negative about their favorite group (Zhang,

2020). These occurrences have given BTS the negative image amongst

other people who have yet to see BTS’ true intentions.

BTS represents the idea, or the mission, of “Music and Artist for

Healing.” (Ruben, 2021). For the people to know BTS’ influence it’s not

sufficient to only use the perspective of fans but other people who

have heard about them. Embracing other perspective can develop a

diverse tool that may connect people to one another.

Students nowadays are exposed to social media where

everything can be found, the good and the bad. As BTS has taken over

the world influencing the youth one song at a time. Making a welfare

program will aid the students and fans, especially in emotional health,

during this pandemic.
